Coco Gauff has outlined how many double faults she is limiting herself to per match.

The 20-year-old has a dynamic and exciting game to watch, but one of her biggest challenges to overcome is cutting down the number of points she gives away on serve at times.

Her first serve when working well is one of the best on tour, but the second serve has proven to be a struggle and her opponents are looking to target it.

But her double fault woes is something Coco Gauff is working hard on in training and she needs to if she wants to consistently win titles and become the World number one.

What has Coco Gauff said about serving double faults?

Gauff is currently competing at the Canadian Open following a disappointing Olympic Games where she failed to even reach the quarter-finals of the singles, women’s and mixed doubles events.

There has been little time for those who played on clay at the Paris Olympics to prepare for the switch to hard courts. But she has made the adjustments and Gauff opened her campaign in Montreal with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Yafan Wang.

Post-match Gauff said she is aiming to serve no more than one or two doubles faults per match, and she managed that against Wang, as she served just one.

“It is getting better. I served well, I had like four or five aces, I think I had four double faults. For me I tried to give myself two per set, so it’s kind of where I expect to be,” Gauff told reporters.

“Obviously you want to go with no double faults but because I go so big on the first serve, it’s kind of a risk you are willing to take. But it is something I am working on.

“I am happy compared to the Olympics, where I didn’t serve as well as I would like to, so coming here it was important to go for my serve every point and that’s what I tried to commit to doing today.”

What are Coco Gauff’s double fault statistics in 2024?

It is clear how concerning the issue of serving double faults has been for Gauff. According to the WTA Tour website, she has served 256 double faults so far this season, which is the highest of the players ranked inside the WTA’s top 100.

In one particular match at the Indian Wells Open, Gauff competed against Yue Yuan in the quarter-finals.

The American won the match 6-4, 6-3, but she produced an alarming 17 doubles faults. Poor serving can impact the rest of a player’s game, which has happened to Gauff, in particular with her forehand.

This shot also has been an issue for Gauff, but she is continuing to work on her weaknesses during the North American hard court swing in the build up to her US Open title defence.
