Coco Gauff reminded tennis fans of one thing after beginning her Canadian Open campaign with a win.

The 20-year-old is on a mission to successfully defend her US Open title as she begins her road to Flushing Meadows in Montreal.

The American entered the WTA 1000 tournaments as the top seed and booked her spot in the next round with a victory over China’s Wang Yafan.

Since Gauff’s semi-final exit at the French Open she has experienced some mixed results, but she has put that in the past and is aiming for a strong run in North America.

Coco Gauff reminded tennis fans of something after winning the Canadian Open first round match?

After an underwhelming Paris Olympic Games, there was no time for Coco Gauff to dwell on the past as she began her Canadian Open campaign.

She received a big cheer from the crowd as she entered the court and after claiming the victory the American commented on tennis fans in general.

In Gauff’s post-match press conference, she commented on spectators that put great pressure and expectations on her shoulders, despite being just 20 years of age.

“If everyone is playing me at their high level it can only make me better. And the thing is that when you have success young, I think people like fans of the sport tend to forget that you are still developing,” she told reporters.

“No sport, maybe except gymnastics are you reaching your peak at 20 years old. I think a lot of times tennis fans forget that, when they see someone do well, they forget that person is developing.

“It’s great that not just me but other girls are doing well so fast, but I think we also have to give grace on us, because we are still becoming a better player.”

Coco Gauff produces a steady performance to win first Canadian Open match

After squandering a 4-1 lead to be pegged back to 4-4 in the first set, Gauff won successive games to take the set.

Once again Gauff opened up a big lead in the second set but Wang fought back to level the set at 4-4.

But the American won a crucial ninth game to go up 5-4, before breaking her opponent’s serve in the following game to seal a 6-4, 6-4 win.

The top seed will take on Diana Shnaider, 20, in the next round and will look to continue her unbeaten record of beating players younger than her, as the Russian was born less than a month after the US Open champion.
