Roger Federer is certain to steal the spotlight at the Laver Cup despite retiring after the 2022 edition of the team event.
Federer watched Carlos Alcaraz play for the first time in Berlin, although he was unable to secure a point for Team Europe.
Playing doubles with Alexander Zverev, the Spaniard lost the final match of day one to Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton.
Team World and Team Europe ended the opening day level at 2-2, with the hosts having needed to come back from an early loss.
Federer caught up with John McEnroe ahead of the Laver Cup, with the former now unfortunately no longer in a playing capacity at the tournament.

He did, however, take a brief moment to take part in a practice session at the Uber Arena, much to the delight of fellow legend Chris Evert.
Reposting footage of Federer hitting back and forth at the Uber Arena in Berlin, Evert simply wrote on X: “Still beautiful!”
Can Roger Federer inspire Team Europe to a Laver Cup win?
Federer’s mere presence in Berlin should be enough to inspire the Team Europe players, who certainly need a helping hand after losing the last two competitions.
The Swiss icon is a legendary figure at the competition, having won 18 points from his four appearances, boasting an 8-4 record.
Team Europe’s current stars can only dream of such a record, but all they can do at this moment is take it one game at a time.

Federer will undoubtedly be giving a helping hand to Team Europe captain Bjorn Borg, who will leave the role after this year’s event.
A captaincy role is perhaps a possibility for Federer in the near future, but next up for Team Europe is Frenchman Yannick Noah.
