Casper Ruud is one of the latest players to succumb to injury after retiring at the Shanghai Masters.

Ruud had a disappointing US Open swing, but he has since bounced back after reaching the semifinals of the Japan Open, where he pushed eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.

The Norwegian has not been a stranger to physical issues in 2025, with Ruud missing Wimbledon due to a knee injury.

However, it was a different injury concern that caused Ruud to retire from his only match at the Shanghai Masters.

Casper Ruud reveals he still plans to play in Stockholm despite injury

Ruud is far from the only player to be struggling at this stage of the season, with seven players including Jannik Sinner retiring at the Shanghai Masters already this year.

With it being unclear as to how serious this wrist injury is for Ruud, having retired from his match against Zizou Bergs in the third set, he has now posted an update for fans on social media.

Ruud’s next scheduled tournament is next week in Stockholm, where Tommy Paul is scheduled to return to tennis, and he has suggested that he still intends to compete at the ATP 250 event.

He wrote on Instagram, “Tough to retire in Shanghai (broken heart emoji). But sometimes the body says stop. I’ll bounce back quickly. See you next week in Stockholm.”

Can Casper Ruud still qualify for the ATP Finals?

Other than being a top competitor, there is likely to be another thing motivating Ruud to want to play an ATP 250 tournament so soon after retiring with injury.

It has been a mixed season for Ruud, but he did win the Madrid Open earlier this year, which was his first Masters 1000 title.

That has enabled him to remain with a chance of qualifying for the year-end ATP Finals, which he has done three of the past four seasons.

Ruud is currently in 11th position in the race to the ATP Finals, where the top eight players will qualify for Turin.

6. Ben Shelton3,720
7. Alex de Minaur3,445
8. Lorenzo Musetti3,385

Only Alcaraz and Sinner have confirmed their qualification for the year-end tournament, and Ruud is 890 points behind eighth-placed Lorenzo Musetti.

Ruud also only has to overtake two players to qualify for the ATP Finals, as ninth-placed Jack Draper has already ended his season due to an arm injury.

The 26-year-old has a busy upcoming schedule to try and achieve this goal, with Ruud planning to play in Stockholm, Basel and Paris in the coming weeks.
