Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner return to the ATP Tour this week, with both players competing at the Qatar Open.

Alcaraz and Sinner are playing their first events since the Australian Open, where the Spaniard clinched the title and completed the career Grand Slam.

The Italian was looking to secure a third successive title in Melbourne, but Sinner lost to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

Alcaraz and Sinner have been the dominant forces on the ATP Tour for some time, with the former now discussing his rivalry with the latter in more detail.

Carlos Alcaraz enjoying ‘beautiful’ rivalry with Jannik Sinner

Speaking ahead of his opening match in Doha against Arthur Rinderknech, top seed Alcaraz explained the benefits of his thrilling head-to-head with Sinner.

“Well, I think the rivalry we’re having is very beautiful and, as you said, I think both of us are smart enough to use,” he told Sky Sport Italy.

“This rivalry to be better, to train even harder, and to push ourselves to the limit every time.

“I think that’s very beautiful, despite the good relationship we have off the court, because he’s a great person and his team is as well.

“Honestly, I’m happy to see that our matches, our rivalry, are reaching more and more people around the world, who watch and get hooked on tennis, which I think is also very special.”

It has indeed been a hugely exciting rivalry between the pair on the ATP Tour, which has involved 16 matches so far.

And it is the Spaniard who holds the historical bragging rights, with Alcaraz enjoying a 10-6 head-to-head record with Sinner.

Sinner could meet Alcaraz at the Qatar Open, but the top two seeds can only play each other in the final should they make it that far.

The former could take the rivalry in another direction by winning their potential final, having just witnessed the latter become the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam.

Sinner has the chance to complete the career Grand Slam at the French Open, a tournament at which he lost the 2025 final to Alcaraz.

Worryingly for the rest of the players on the ATP Tour, the pair are still young and are certain to continue competing for many more titles in the years to come.

Their rivalry has undoubtedly motivated each other to push even harder, with Alcaraz and Sinner also motivating other ATP players to be the ones to close the gap.
