Carlos Alcaraz sends message to Oliver Tarvet on Instagram after knocking him out of Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz is a firm favourite at Wimbledon, but he played the role of villain in round two by beating Briton Oliver Tarvet.

ATP number two Alcaraz met British qualifier Tarvet on Centre Court in the second round of the Grand Slam, winning their clash 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

Home favourite Tarvet set up the meeting with the Spanish superstar after defeating Leandro Riedi in his first round test at Wimbledon.

Alcaraz returned to his usual self in the two-hour, 17-minute win, having been locked in a lengthier battle with Fabio Fognini in round one.

He won their tie 7-5, 6-7(5-7), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 before extending his career-best winning streak to 20 matches against Tarvet.

Alcaraz messaged Fognini after their match, with the Spaniard now doing the same with his latest Wimbledon opponent.

He wrote on Instagram: “What a privilege to play on this court! Congratulations for the match Ollie Tarvet! Well played!

Tarvet plays college tennis for the University of San Diego, and the 21-year-old was making his Grand Slam debut.

Alcaraz meanwhile is chasing a third successive Wimbledon title and the sixth Grand Slam title of his career.

Nick Kyrgios thinks Alcaraz will be hard to beat at Wimbledon, with the latter taking on the winner of Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jan-Lennard Struff in round three.

Regardless of his opponent, he will be the favourite to progress after producing a professional display against Tarvet.

The Briton can hold his head very high despite the defeat, having clearly left a mark on Alcaraz after their Centre Court battle.

But he was ultimately no match for the world number two, who hit 37 winners and broke his opponent’s serve on six occasions.

He’s now chasing two significant records at the All England Club, one of which involves becoming the fifth man to clinch three consecutive Wimbledon titles.

The other involves emulating Bjorn Borg to become the second man to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same season in consecutive years.
