Carlos Alcaraz says what was ‘complicated’ about his Paris Masters win over Nicolas Jarry

Carlos Alcaraz is safely into the last 16 of the Paris Masters after his second round win over Nicolas Jarry.

Alcaraz is proud of his year so far, with the world number two having clinched four titles, including two Grand Slams.

The Spaniard now has a superb chance of adding to that tally this week, particularly given that Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Paris Masters.

Fellow star Novak Djokovic is also absent from the Masters 1,000 tournament, where Alcaraz is the second seed and received a bye into round two.

He needed one hour and 30 minutes to overcome Chilean Jarry in the round of 32, with the Spaniard winning 7-5, 6-1.

Alcaraz enacted revenge on Jarry with the Paris Masters success, having lost to him in the Buenos Aires semi-final at the beginning of the year.

But it wasn’t all straightforward for the Spanish star, who as quoted by the ATP website said: “I think I played really good tennis [in the first set], but at the end it was complicated.

“I’m just really happy to get through the opening set, it was really important for me to come into the second with more confidence. I [need] time to get used to the speed of the court.

“It’s been two years since I have won a match here in Paris-Bercy, so everytime that I keep going is a gift for me.”

Carlos Alcaraz improves fine record at ATP Masters 1,000 events

Alcaraz now faces the winner of Ugo Humbert versus Marcos Giron for a place in the Paris Masters quarter-finals.

That will be another tough task regardless of the opponent, but the four-time Grand Slam champion will be very confident of reaching the latter stages.

He now has a 13-2 record in opening rounds this season, having just taken his head-to-head record with Jarry to 3-1.

Moreover, Alcaraz is 16-4 at ATP Masters 1,000 events in 2024, with another strong on the cards this week.

The matches are likely to get tougher as the competition progresses, but a title could be inevitable given the absences of Sinner and Djokovic.
