Jannik Sinner reigned supreme over Carlos Alcaraz as he produced a four-set masterclass to come from behind to claim a first Wimbledon title.

The world number one showed exactly why he’s the man to beat on the ATP Tour by taking three sets in succession after dropping the first one 6-4.

Sinner enjoyed a real sliding doors moment in the quarter-final of Wimbledon. He was trailing two sets to love against Grigor Dimitrov when the Bulgarian performer tore his pectoral muscle and was forced to retire.

Alcaraz will come again, but much like Sinner had to after the French Open reverse to the Spaniard, he now has to try and bounce back at the US Open, which gets underway in August.

Carlos Alcaraz thanks Jannik Sinner after losing Wimbledon final

The 22-year-old has once again been brilliant in defeat and had some kind words for Sinner after being blown away by him in the second half of the match.

Alcaraz gave his all as he always does, but on this occasion it was the Italian who managed to get over the line and claim a maiden Wimbledon crown.

Alcaraz said in his on-court interview: “It’s difficult to lose. It’s always difficult to lose. Even if it’s the final.

“But first of all, I have to congratulate Jannik once again. It’s congratulations to you every week! It’s a really well-deserved trophy.

“Unbelievable, two weeks in London for you, playing great tennis.

“For your team as well, I know there are a lot of family and friends here to watch you in the final, so just an amazing team around you.

“Really happy for you, keep it going and really happy to be able to build a good relationship off the court and a great rivalry on the court that makes me improve every day so thank you very much and congratulations.”

Alcaraz will come again and he also made some claims on his Wimbledon tournament as a whole.

He continued: “Really happy. Really proud of everything I am doing.

“At the beginning of the season I struggled a little bit on the court and off the court but then suddenly I started to bring enjoyment on the court again and be happy again and that excitement I have every time I step on the court, thank you to the team and my family and friends, a lot of friends I have I am lucky I have them here without them it would not be possible to stand here right now.

“So it’s a great journey so far, which I’m really proud about, so I just want to keep going and bringing joy on the court, and I have to say thank you to them as well.

Alcaraz can bounce back and win US Open

The Spaniard will now have to go away, rest and recover with the next Grand Slam getting underway in around six weeks.

Alcaraz has won the Flushing Meadows contest already and he will hope to topple the reigning champion Sinner when that tournament gets underway.

It appears as though these two players are going to do battle on a number of occasions across their careers and the fact that they’re a similar age makes things very exciting.

Alcaraz has tasted defeat on this occasion but he will bounce back and now he has the chance to showcase exactly what a good champion he is by responding to this setback.
