Carlos Alcaraz has won yet another tournament by beating Lorenzo Musetti in Sunday’s Monte Carlo Masters final.
Alcaraz came from a set behind to win a second title of 2025, with this one his first since winning in Rotterdam in February.
The 21-year-old really is an incredible performer and after losing the first set 6-3, he roared back to thrash Musetti 6-1, 6-0 in the next two sets.
Alcaraz praised Musetti after the match, with the pair clearly having a great deal of mutual respect for each other.
In winning this title, Alcaraz is climbing up the rankings and by moving into the number two spot in the rankings, he might have helped Alexander Zverev out.
Carlos Alcaraz has helped out Alexander Zverev without even knowing
The Australian Open finalist has been in relatively poor form of late and there has been discussion among tennis fans over whether he actually warranted being called the number two player in the world.
That is probably a bit harsh given that he’s still a very talented player, although it does feel odd that a player can be number two in the world without ever winning a Grand Slam title.
Now, however, Zverev has dropped to number three and perhaps that’s exactly what the German needs in order to take stock of himself and have a little reset to try and rediscover his form.
With Alcaraz now gaining on Jannik Sinner at the top of the tree, those two can look forward to many battles as the year progresses and now, Zverev would be wise to forget the rankings and focus on playing tennis.
At 27-years-old, Zverev is hardly old and given the quality that he possesses, he should be capable of winning his maiden Grand Slam title at some point in the future.
Zverev’s record since Australian Open final
Frankly, Zverev hasn’t done a deal since reaching the final in the first Grand Slam of 2025.
The new world number three is going to be back on the court tomorrow in Munich at the Bavarian international, striving for some form.
| Alexander Zverev since reaching Australian Open final | Round |
| Argetinga Open | QF |
| Rio Open | QF |
| Mexican Open | L16 |
| Indian Wells | L64 |
| Miami Open | L16 |
| Monte Carlo Masters | L32 |
Zverev has all of the shots within his locker but clearly some of the social media noise about his ability has been making an impact.
It will now be fascinating to see how Zverev can perform on the back of losing his number two world ranking and it’s perhaps time for him to simply focus on playing tennis and forget about what anyone else is saying or doing.
