Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have once again provided a treat for fans, with the former coming out on top this time in the Italian Open final.
It was a clash that had so many narratives running around it in the lead-up, with the former having perhaps not been as clinical as we know he can be, and the latter returning from his absence from tennis.
Sinner was banned for three months after accepting a deal following two positive drug tests in 2024.
Whenever they meet, the tennis world stands up and takes note, with good reason. After all, they are quite clearly the two leading players on the ATP tour.
On this particular occasion, it was Carlos Alcaraz who came out on top, and in doing so he has made even more history.
Carlos Alcaraz matches Roger Federer record with Italian Open title
Breaking records is nothing new for the Spaniard, whose level since bursting onto the scene many years ago has been mind-blowing.
How he continues to compete on all of the biggest stages is something that will boggle the minds of his competitors, and yet it is potentially the stars of the past who should be most worried.

After all, with the rate at which he is accumulating elite trophies, he is coming for every record.
OptaAce have just detailed a couple of fresh successes, with one in particular putting him in some legendary company alongside Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer.
They then wrote: ‘10 – Carlos Alcaraz (22 years and two days) has become the fifth-youngest player in the Open Era to win 10+ ATP event titles on clay after Mats Wilander, Rafael Nadal, Kent Carlsson and Bjorn Borg. Pantheon.’
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner play out another thriller
Although this one did not go the distance, there was still so much to enjoy from Alcaraz’s win over Jannik Sinner earlier today.
Especially given the world number one is likely not even close to his full level yet, visibly lacking proper match play as the second set went on.
With time, that will return, and the spectacle that is Alcaraz vs Sinner will only grow.
Should they meet in the final of Roland Garros in a few weeks’ time, such excitement might reach an all-time high.
Sinner’s shots were crisp and deep, regularly stretching Alcaraz’s capabilities.

However, the speed and flexibility with which the 22-year-old stalks the court make him often unstoppable. Almost everything that came over his side of the net got returned.
When Alcaraz is in this kind of mood, it’s unlikely that anybody can stop him. Sinner will certainly keep trying though across the next decade or so.
