Jannik Sinner has defended his Australian Open title after beating Alexander Zverev in a straight sets final.
Sinner caused concern against Ben Shelton, having suffered with cramping issues and required a lengthy medical time out earlier on in the tournament against Holger Rune.
However, these issues did not appear to be present in the final, despite Sinner clutching at his hamstring during the second set.
Many fans were hoping for a final between Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who was beaten by Novak Djokovic at the quarter-final stage.
However, Zverev came through following Djokovic’s retirement for what is now his third Grand Slam final defeat.

Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal both send messages to Jannik Sinner after Australian Open win
Alcaraz was one of the first to congratulate Sinner, with the rivals enjoying a friendship off the court.
After Sinner won his second consecutive title in Melbourne, Alcaraz posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“Many congrats @janniksin! (followed by clapping, trophy and Australian flag emojis). Bravo!!!” said Alcaraz.
Shortly after saw Alcaraz’s compatriot and 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, who retired last year, also send a message to Sinner.
Translated to English, Nadal’s message for Sinner on Instagram said, “Congratulations Jan @janniksin. Awesome.”

Alcaraz and Nadal were not the only people to wish Sinner well, with the former coach of Coco Gauff, Brad Gilbert, also showing his appreciation for the world number one.
“Congrats. Sin city @janniksin @darren_cahill whole team, simply amazing winning 2nd consecutive @AustralianOpen.”
Jon Wertheim voiced his opinions throughout the Australian Open, and was also part of the group wishing Sinner well after his third Grand Slam victory.
“Jannik Sinner – he of the bloodless efficiency and unanswerable power – defends his @AustralianOpen title….the range of possible outcomes re: the rest of his 2025 is vast,” said the renowned tennis journalist.
