The dream of Carlos Alcaraz becoming the youngest player in history to win all four Grand Slams is over for another year after he exited the Australian Open to Novak Djokovic.

It was a game featuring two different generations. In front of a packed Rod Laver Arena, it was the mentor who silenced the pupil, coming through in four sets to reach the Australian Open semi-final for a twelfth time.

Alcaraz will get two more chances to become the youngest of all time to win all four majors and eclipse Rafael Nadal. However, as a winner, he will be desperately disappointed to lose at the quarter-final stage this time around.

Djokovic struggled with injury during his win over Alcaraz. As a result, it remains to be seen whether he can defy his own brilliance and win a 25th Grand Slam given he’s quite clearly not playing with his full fitness intact.

Carlos Alcaraz sends message to Novak Djokovic after losing Australian Open match

Although the 21-year-old is naturally gutted to be out, he’s excited the competition with a great deal of grace for such a young professional.

Djokovic paid tribute to Alcaraz after he beat him in the last eight. Now, it would appear as though Alcaraz has decided to return that favour and sent a touching message to the Serbian star.

He posted on X: “I fought to the end, but it was not to be. Congratulations Novak Djokovic for winning a great battle out there yesterday! See you next year Melbourne. Thank you for your support.”

The defeat has seen Alcaraz lose in the quarter-final of a Grand Slam for the first time since this event in 2024. On that occasion, he lost to Alexander Zverev and now the German will need to topple Djokovic to reach the final.

Alcaraz will learn from Djokovic defeat

With time firmly on his side, this defeat won’t define Alcaraz. The Spaniard is still going to break all sorts of records and win many more Grand Slam titles during his career.

Alcaraz won two of the four majors in 2024 – the French Open and Wimbledon – whilst he suffered a shock second-round exit to Botic van de Zandschulp at the US Open.

These are merely bumps in the road, however. The ATP Tour is still brimming with talent and with the superhuman Djokovic still going strong, Alcaraz will have to take these defeats on the chin.

Alcaraz will come again at the Australian Open. This message to Djokovic is extremely classy and he will now go away and try to work on a few things ready for the next tournament.
