Fabio Fognini has seen the tributes pour in after he announced his retirement from professional tennis.
Fognini officially confirmed his career was over after calling for a press conference at Wimbledon.
The 38-year-old was set to retire later this year, but after Fognini pushed Alcaraz to five sets in the first round of Wimbledon he has decided that was his last match.
Alcaraz and many others have now reacted to Fognini’s announcement, sending him messages on social media.

Fognini pushed Alcaraz at Wimbledon more than any other player so far this year, rolling back the years to produce some crowd-pleasing tennis on Centre Court.
After he eventually came through in five sets, Alcaraz was full of praise for Fognini, and he has now wished him well in retirement.
Alcaraz wrote on Instagram, “Congratulations on your great career @fabiofogna! (love heart emoji) All the best for what’s to come! (praying hands emoji).”
It was not just Alcaraz who wished Fognini well, with his compatriot and world number one Jannik Sinner also taking to social media.
After Sinner beat Shelton to reach the Wimbledon semifinals, he paid tribute to Fognini, “Incredible career Fabio (tennis racket emoji) Wishing you the best in this new chapter! (love heart emoji).”
It was not just active players who were messaging Fognini, with six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker also wanting to congratulate the former top 10 player on his career.
In a message on X (formerly known as Twitter), Becker wrote, “Fantastic career with perfect ending on Wimbledon CC against @carlosalcaraz ! Well done Fabio !”

While Fognini sometimes split opinion due to his on-court antics at times in his career, he did also achieve many great things both on the singles and doubles court.
Reaching the top 10 in both singles and doubles, Fognini won a combined 17 titles across the two disciplines.

The biggest moment from his singles career came at the Monte Carlo Masters in 2019, where he beat Rafael Nadal en route to winning the prestigious title.
Fognini also won a Grand Slam title in doubles, partnering his compatriot Simone Bolelli to triumph at the Australian Open in 2015.
