A former top-ten tennis player has today announced his retirement from the sport.
It’s never a nice day when any player decides to hang up the racket, but when one who boasts such talent and has enjoyed such a long, illustrious career does so, it stings the community that little bit more.
What makes this even more surprising is that the player in question, aged 38, actually enjoyed a thrilling five-set match at Wimbledon this year in just the very first round.
He went toe-to-toe with the two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, and deservedly got his flowers afterwards from the Spaniard and Centre Court.
Now, Fabio Fognini has made a shocking revelation.
Fabio Fognini announces his retirement from tennis
The Italian had always planned to retire in 2025, but with reports out of Italy suggesting that he had fast-tracked that decision, he confirmed as much at a press conference at Wimbledon today.
After all, what better way to bow out of the sport than in a thrilling five-set loss to arguably the best player on the planet?
Speaking to reporters, the former world number nine said: “I was here a few days ago, I had mentioned it. Now the decision has been made, and I tell you that this is the best place and time to say goodbye.
“I have to be honest, after that match with Alcaraz, I thought I didn’t want to go back to places I didn’t want to be. No Challengers to make up points. I’ve always lived for tennis, it’s always been my life. I knew this moment would come, and I’m at peace because the last few years have been very difficult.”
He then spoke briefly about his wife: “She supported me, as she always has. This is my job; for days, I haven’t slept very well. After the match between Djokovic and Cobolli, I’ll say goodbye to tennis forever.”
Fognini twice pegged back Alcaraz in front of a raucous Centre Court crowd, who then afforded him a king’s ovation as he left the arena.
Carlos Alcaraz questioned why Fabio Fognini was retiring after their Wimbledon match
After the match, Alcaraz admitted he was stunned that Fognini was retiring, having run him so close.
There was clearly an unbridled amount of mutual respect between the two of them, exhibited not only in their play but in how they reacted afterwards.
They met at the net and shook hands before walking arm-in-arm back to the umpire’s chair.
Alcaraz, in his post-match press conference, then admitted: “First of all, to be honest, I don’t know why it’s his last Wimbledon because the level he has shown, he can still play three or four more years! Unbelievable,” said Alcaraz. “I have to give him the credit of such a great match

“Fabio is a great player, he has shown his whole career the level and the talent he has and once again he has done so again today.
“I am just a bit sad that this is probably his last Wimbledon but happy to have lived and shared the court many times with him, the locker room with him and we are going to enjoy the last of him.”
It’s a sad day for tennis, but delightful for Fognini that he gets to retire after such a stunning and memorable match against a generational talent.
