Jannik Sinner is taking a well-deserved break from tennis after his superb success at the US Open earlier this month.

Sinner tops the 2024 earnings list following his win over Taylor Fritz at Flushing Meadows, representing his second career Grand Slam title.

But the Italian has since been playing a supporting role on the sidelines, having cheered on Italy in the Davis Cup.

Defending champions Italy became the first team to qualify from Group A for the Davis Cup Final 8 thanks to wins over Brazil and Belgium.

A third win arrived against the Netherlands, with Matteo Berrettini playing a key role for his nation in Bologna.

Berrettini won all three of his singles matches, with the Italian copying the celebration of compatriot Sinner in his win over Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands.

Standing still and soaking up the cheers from the crowd, Berrettini’s celebration caught the eye of Boris Becker, who wrote on X: “Forza Matteo.”

Can Jannik Sinner help Italy defend their Davis Cup title?

Sinner will have loved the celebrations from his fellow Italian, but perhaps more importantly the superb performances from Berrettini.

A Davis Cup Final 8 spot for November has now been secured, with Sinner very likely to join his teammates for the knockout stages.

Sinner knows all about Davis Cup success, with the two-time Grand Slam champion having helped Italy win their first title since 1976 last year.

He overcame Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-0 to secure a 2-0 win over Australia last time out, after Matteo Arnaldi had defeated Alexei Popyrin.

Berrettini wants Sinner’s ‘dedication to work’, but it seems that the former doesn’t need much inspiration from the latter at this moment in time.
