Emma Raducanu has elected not to take part in Great Britain’s upcoming Billie Jean King (BJK) Cup ties.

Raducanu made career history at the Miami Open, achieving something for the first time since her historic US Open win in 2021.

The 22-year-old’s breakthrough run at the WTA 1000 tournament came to an end in the quarter-finals, with Raducanu being beaten by Jessica Pegula.

Raducanu was unsure of what was next at the time, before it was later revealed that she had withdrawn from the BJK Cup.

Anne Keothavong says how she feels about Emma Raducanu’s BJK Cup withdrawal

Upon the announcement of Raducanu’s withdrawal, her representatives cited that she needed to ‘look after her body’ ahead of a busy clay and grass court season.

Raducanu was subsequently replaced by Jodie Burrage, who will join Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal, Harriet Dart and Olivia Nicholls for Great Britain’s upcoming qualifier ties against Germany and the Netherlands.

Ahead of their first matches, the Great Britain team and captain Anne Keothavong fielded questions from the media.

One of those questions related to Raducanu, with Keothavong admitting that she was disappointed by the withdrawal, but could understand why the decision was made.

“Yeah, naturally disappointed,” said Keothavong. “But, equally I understand where she is coming from and look she gave a lot to this team last year and you know was a huge part of the reason why she achieved the success that we did.

“But, equally I have got five players here that are highly motivated to be here and are well prepped and I really hope Emma will be part of this again in the future.”

Raducanu was a big part of the BJK Cup last year, helping Great Britain reach the semi-finals by winning all five of her matches.

Where is Emma Raducanu playing next?

Not only did Raducanu withdraw from the BJK Cup, but she also decided to pull out of the WTA 250 tournament in Rouen, France.

The world number 47 is next scheduled to compete at the Madrid Open, where Raducanu struggled last year after losing in the first round.

Raducanu will then head to the Italian Open, where she retired from her only previous match against Bianca Andreescu back in 2022.

This will all lead up to the second major of the season, with Raducanu skipping Roland Garros last year to focus on grass instead.

It is unclear whether Raducanu will be with a coach in Madrid, after having Mark Petchey by her side at the Miami Open.

What is clear is that the WTA main draw of the Madrid Open will get underway on Tuesday April 22.
