Emma Raducanu impressed at last month’s Miami Open but hasn’t been seen on tour since.
The British star enjoyed her best tournament in years as she reached the quarterfinals of the 2025 Miami Open.
Raducanu took down the likes of Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova in Florida before eventually falling to defeat against Jessica Pegula, 4-6, 7-6, 2-6.

She was expected to return to action in the Netherlands, but Raducanu withdrew from Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup squad, a decision that was met with disappointment from her captain, Anne Keothavong.
Having withdrawn from another WTA tournament in France, citing a need for ‘re-evaluation’, one tennis legend now shares his frustrations with the 22-year-old.
Andy Roddick is ‘frustrated’ with Emma Raducanu as she takes break from tennis after strong run in Miami
Speaking on his Served with Andy Roddick podcast, former world number one Andy Roddick reacted to the news of Raducanu taking a break from tennis to ‘recalibrate.’
“Recalibrating what? She was playing great,” he said.
“She just found her form; why is she recalibrating? What does that mean?
“I get so frustrated. I think she’s so good for the game, I’m such a fan of hers. I personally like listening to her reasoning on things, and it’s just like you get to the quarters, and you’re finally kind of getting momentum, and you stop.
“She looked great, looked like a top-ten player in Miami.

“Why put a speedbump in your season? It seems like it happens over and over.”
Raducanu has been rumoured to hire British coach Mark Petchey for her team, having enjoyed success with him by her side in Miami.
Roddick thinks Petchey would be a good fit for the former US Open champion, as he reveals what he liked about the pairing recently.

“I like that fit, I remember watching the coverage, in Miami you can see the big field with people and it was ten minutes before she was going on and they were playing this bouncy ball thing, where you have the trampoline which you bounce it off,” said Roddick.
“She was laughing, looked relaxed, I’m like oh, that looks very, very comfortable.
“I love Mark Petchey, think he has a great tennis brain, think he’s endlessly curious about the game of tennis.”
The world number 47 has been criticized for her turnover of coaches recently, as Roddick now questions whether that could come back to bite her in the future.

“I’ve got to think it’s hard to enter into a new agreement, give up whatever else you have going on in life knowing this could be a two-week situation,” he said.
“Mark [Petchey] obviously knows the deal, I think there’s a longer term relationship, I think that would be great, I’d be fully supportive but I think you’re narrowing the pool of coaching talent just by virtue of you having this quick trigger on firing people.
“I hope there is some tolerance for something being uncomfortable and not this knee jerk, let’s get out and then recalibrate.”
Jon Wertheim agrees with Andy Roddick and says Emma Raducanu keeps scoring career ‘own-goals’
Roddick’s co-host Jon Wertheim gave his thoughts on decisions Raducanu has made over the years.
“There are so many own-goals, so many moves where you just scratch your head,” he said.
“From absolutely blowing through coaches, the sheer number of coaches she’s blown through, sometimes when she’s playing well, is mystifying.
| Date | Length of relationship | Coach |
| March 2025 | 2 weeks | Vladimir Platenik |
| January 2025 | 1 year | Nick Cavaday |
| June 2023 | 6 months | Sebastian Sachs |
| October 2022 | 3 months | Dmitry Tursunov |
| July 2022 | 1 month | Iain Bates and Jane O’Donoghue |
| April 2022 | 5 months | Torben Beltz |
| September 2021 | 3 months | Andrew Richardson |
| July 2021 | 4 months | Nigel Sears |
“The pull-outs, the withdrawals, she doesn’t want to qualify, I don’t know.
“There are a lot of really mystifying career management moves here.”
Roddick then said he hoped to see Raducanu return to the form that saw her impress fans in Miami.
“I guess the point here is that I hope it really works. This is all hearsay and based on his presence in Miami with her. I hope it really works because I think Petch is great,” said Roddick.
“I hope she gives a coaching relationship the chance to sink in and that’s it.
“I think she is so good for the game, and so good for tennis.
“The last thing I want is for us to have the same conversation four years from now, like we’ve been having for the last three and a half years.

“I hope it sinks in, I think the world of Petch. I think the world of Emma [Raducanu]; I think she is phenomenal.”
Raducanu is currently scheduled to return in Spain for the Madrid WTA 1000 event, where she lost in the first round last year.
The 2025 Madrid Open is set to begin on Monday, April 21.
