Andy Murray’s coaching start date with Novak Djokovic may not come when expected

Novak Djokovic has made a major change to his short-term coaching staff with the appointment of Andy Murray.

Murray and Djokovic respect each other, with that respect undoubtedly a key reason behind the latter’s decision to hire the former.

His experience and knowledge of the game will also be factors, with Murray beginning his coaching of the Serbian in the off-season.

Carlos Alcaraz says Djokovic and Murray together is ‘incredible’ for tennis, with the pair going to continue their partnership at the Australian Open.

And Djokovic will be using another tournament in the Brisbane International in a bid to fully prepare for the first major event of the season.

Andy Murray not coaching Novak Djokovic at Brisbane International

He joins the likes of home favourite Nick Kyrgios and defending champion Grigor Dimitrov in committing to the tournament.

But Sky Sports News has reported that Djokovic will not be joined by his new coach Murray for the Brisbane International.

The competition gets underway on December 29, with the Australian Open then beginning on January 12.

It seemed very likely that the Brisbane International would be the first tournament for Djokovic and Murray, particularly given how close it is to the Australian Open.

And the duo teaming up in the former certainly would have made sense, if only to get to know each other a bit better regarding their future working relationship.

At the same time, however, it would be foolish to question any decision from the Serbian, with Djokovic one of the greatest and most experienced players of all time.

He is aiming for a record-extending 25th men’s Grand Slam title in 2025, with an Australian Open triumph on the cards given his success at the event.

Djokovic has won the first major tournament of the season on 10 occasions, well ahead of any other player, with victory in Melbourne also allowing him to extend that honour.
