Andre Agassi was very clear on why American men are going through a Grand Slam drought.
The US dominated the tennis scene in the second half of the 20th century, where the likes of John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Agassi himself all lifted multiple major honours.
But since Andy Roddick clinched the US Open title in 2003, no American male has managed to succeed at Grand Slam level.
But Andre Agassi, who won the last of his eight majors at the 2003 Australian Open, thinks he knows exactly why America’s male players have struggled to win majors over the last two decades.

Why does Andre Agassi think America’s male players have not won any Grand Slams?
A multitude of American players have tried to win Grand Slams since Rodidick triumphed at Flushing Meadows 21 years ago.
That year he reached the quarter-finals relatively untroubled, before needing to come from two sets down to defeat David Nalbandian in the semi-finals.
Roddick then beat Juan Carlos Ferrero, the coach of Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets to win his one and only major. No American male has won a major since.
Addressing the two-decade Grand Slam drought for his compatriots, Agassi thinks it is due to the brilliance of arguably tennis’ three greatest players, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
“The reason for American [men] not winning is an unfortunate set of decades where the guys (Federer, Nadal and Djokovic) were very stingy and greedy”, Agassi told Sportstar. “I mean, 66 Grand Slams in the same generation! There’s not a lot left there.”

Who is the last American men’s player to reach a Grand Slam final?
Taylor Fritz came closest to winning a major after he became the first American to reach a Grand Slam final since Roddick pushed Federer to five sets at Wimbledon in 2009.
He reached the US Open final in September, which was the first Grand Slam championship match of his career.
But Fritz was comfortably beaten by Jannik Sinner in straight sets, who won his second Grand Slam of 2024.
Following the match Fritz told his home fans: “Being an American at the US Open is just incredible, I’ve been feeling the love all week so thank you so much.
“I know we’ve been waiting for a champion for a long time so I’m sorry I couldn’t get it done this time. I’m going to keep working and hopefully I’ll get it done next time.”
