American tennis has made history at the ATP tournament in Newport.

The record books have been re-written at the The Infosys Hall of Fame Open which is a grass court tournament played after the Wimbledon Championships has concluded.

This is perhaps the final opportunity for the players involved to get their hands on a trophy while playing on the slick and low-bouncing surface that is grass.

The American players are certainly making the most of it, with US legend and former Wimbledon champion Andre Agassi watching from the stands.

What piece of history did American tennis make at Newport?

America’s Reilly Opelka and Alex Michelsen will face each other in the semi-finals at the Newport Hall of Fame Open, which has been a tournament on the ATP Tour since 1976.

In the other semi-final, Marcos Giron will take on his US Olympic teammate Christopher Eubanks, who advanced to his first tour-level semi-final since winning the Mallorca Open in 2023.

This is the first all-American semi-finals lineup at the Hall of Fame Open since 1985 and Giron, who reached his third semi-final of the year, is very pleased about it.

“Four Americans in the semi-finals is something we love to see, I’m pumped that we’re here,” Giron said.

“I’ve known Chris for a long time so it’s great to see him stepping up this week and playing really well and I’m really proud to be teammates with him the next couple of week.”

Who was the last American quartet to reach the Hall of Fame Open semi-finals?

Opelka, Michelsen, Giron and Eubanks is the first all-American semi-final lineup since Tom Gullikson, David Pate, John Sadri and Tim Mayotte in 1985.

Gullikson and Sadre advanced to the final that year and the former claimed a 6-3, 7-6 victory.

In 2024 Opelka came from a set down to defeat Mackenzie McDonald to reach the semi-finals, while Michelsen beat Aleksandar Kovacevic to reach the last four.

Giron eased to a 6-4, 6-2 over Alex Bolt to book his semi-final place, while Eubanks won a third set tiebreak to get past Aleksandar Vukic.
