The penultimate WTA 1000 event of the year in Beijing is approaching its latter stages, with plenty of points up for grabs at the China Open.

Reigning champion Coco Gauff continued her title defence after overcoming Eva Lys in straight sets, and will now face Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Jessica Pegula completed a comeback win against Emma Navarro to set up a final-four clash with Linda Noskova.

With three US stars in the semifinals of the China Open, American history will be made at the event when they take to the courts to fight for a place in the final.

US women’s stars complete feat for the first time since 2003

Since the format’s introduction in 1990, three Americans have now reached the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event for just the second time.

The US women are dominating in Beijing, and now Gauff, Anisimova and Pegula have achieved the feat for the first time since 2003.

The last time it was managed was in 2003, when Monica Seles, Chanda Rubin, Lindsay Davenport and Lisa Raymond all reached the semifinals in Tokyo.

Davenport ultimately emerged victorious that year, besting Seles in the final after three sets of play.

Jessica Pegula now trails only Serena Williams in WTA statistic

With her victory over Navarro, Pegula is now the second-oldest player to reach the semifinals of the China Open.

At 31 years and 181 days, she trails only Serena Williams, who reached the final four in Beijing at 32 years and four days of age in 2013.

Pegula is seeking to claim her fourth title of the 2025 season, and the 10th of her career so far.

She has faced her next opponent, Noskova, twice at tour-level events before, having won their most recent meeting in Bad Homburg.
