Alexander Zverev left the crowd in hysterics when he shared his reaction to Andy Murray becoming Novak Djokovic’s coach.

The tennis world was shocked when the announcement was made in November, just days after Rafael Nadal retired from the sport.

The duo have been working hard in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open, where Djokovic is trying to win the Grand Slam for a record-extending 11th time.

There was plenty of reaction to the news from other players, including the two-time Grand Slam finalist Alexander Zverev.

On Thursday, Novak Djokovic took on Zverev in an exhibition match on Rod Laver Arena.

The pair contested a tight one-set shootout, which Djokovic claimed 7-6(6) to the delight of the crowd.

Post-match, Zverev and Djokovic conducted an interview alongside Andy Murray, where the German was asked what he thinks of the Brit coaching the 24-time Grand Slam champion, and his response left the crowd in hysterics.

“What did I think? S***!,” Zverev exclaimed. “In a negative way for me and a positive way for Novak, I guess. I don’t know Novak has won 24 Grand Slams, I feel like it doesn’t matter any more who he has as a coach.

“He is probably going to win five more while I am still trying to chase my first. The story continues, I am getting older, Novak is getting younger and somehow we are still going to here in 10 years’ time!”

Andy Murray explains how he became Novak Djokovic’s coach

Djokovic previously explained how Murray became his coach, but now the double Olympic champion has shared the story from his perspective.

Murray retired from playing professional tennis at the Olympic Games in August 2024 just three months before Djokovic’s team.

He admitted being surprised when Djokovic asked him to be his coach, and admitted he needed to ask for the support from a very special person before giving his answer.

“We exchanged a few messages. Got on a call and had a long chat. Novak asked me to help him. I was shocked, I was not expecting that when he called,” Murray said.

“I said I am going to have to ask my wife, see what she says and she was really supportive of it and it’s a pretty unique opportunity. We thought we’d give it a go and see if I could help!”
