Alexander Zverev reveals the change he is trying to make for 2025 to beat Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

Alexander Zverev beat Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 6-4 to advance to the semi-finals of the ATP Finals.

Zverev has enjoyed a perfect start to the ATP Finals in Turin, winning all three of his group-stage matches without dropping a set.

After winning his opening match against Andrey Rublev, Zverev battled past Casper Ruud to put himself within touching distance of the semi-finals.

He then came up against Carlos Alcaraz, who Zverev lost to in the French Open Final earlier this year, but enjoyed more success this time around.

Zverev beat an under-the-weather Alcaraz to advance to the ATP Finals last four for the fourth time in his career, having won the title twice before.

The German has been in great form to end the season, having won the Paris Masters earlier this month.

His impressive form is yet to translate to Grand Slam success however, with Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner sharing the four Major titles in 2024, something that Zverev is working hard to change for next year.

Speaking in his post-match press conference after beating Alcaraz at the ATP Finals, Zverev explained what is unique about playing Alcaraz and Sinner.

“Well I think I can answer that question quite easily, everybody talks about how great they are defensively, but I don’t think they play defence a lot anymore,” he said.

“Tennis is not about defence anymore, it used to be a few years back when tennis was quite different, a little bit slower still.

“I think those guys, 90% of the time they are only playing offense.”

Zverev went on to explain how he is looking to improve and compete against the two young stars.

“I personally think about trying to win big tournaments, and trying to improve for next year, to be able to compete with Carlos [Alcaraz] and with Jannik [Sinner],” he said.

“It’s about making sure that you can keep up offensively with them, being able to keep up with their speeds, their groundstrokes as well, so that’s the number one thing.”

The German also admitted the area of his game that he thinks he’s struggled with in the past.

“I think not backing off, and going for your shots at the most important moments, that’s maybe where I’ve struggled at in my career, trusting my shots, and going for them when I need to,” he said.

“I personally think that that’s something I still need to continue to work on and hopefully next year is going to be even better.”

Despite all the success that Zverev has achieved so far in his career, he is still yet to get his hands on a maiden Grand Slam trophy.

Twice a losing finalist, the German seems unable to get over the final hurdle but looks to be in the best form of his life as he approaches the 2025 season.

But just how close has he gotten to winning a first Grand Slam?

13 times, Zverev has reached at least the quarter-final stages of a Grand Slam tournament, one of the most consistent performers at the Major level.

Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem have been problem matchups for Zverev at the big tournaments, with the 27-year-old falling to defeat against the pair six times in the latter stages of tournaments.

Zverev will be hoping to continue his strong form into the new year and finally get off the mark and win his first Grand Slam title at the 2025 Australian Open.

Zverev will return to court to face off against Taylor Fritz in the ATP Finals semi-finals on Saturday.
