Carlos Alcaraz commented on how a key moment in his season gave him the confidence to go on and win the French Open.

The 21-year-old entered the Grand Slam with plenty of uncertainty given his arm injury and lack of matches throughout the clay court season.

But the Spaniard’s elite mentality and confidence in his ability improved match by match and that was clear for all to see during the semi-final and final.

He recovered from two sets to one down to record successive wins over new World number one Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev to win Roland Garros for the first time.

Alcaraz is now the first man in the open era to win his first three Grand Slams on three different surfaces.

By the time the spring American hard court season began, Alcaraz, who had not won a title since Wimbledon 2023, had yet to taste success in 2024. That was until he went to Indian Wells, where he successfully defended his championship.

After dropping the first set in his opening round, Alcaraz was dominant and on the way to the title he ended Sinner’s unbeaten start to 2024.

After winning the French Open, Alcaraz pointed to his victory in the Californian desert as a pivotal moment in his season. “Indian Wells was a key moment, yes. There, everything went well on and off the court,” the Spaniard said.

“We laughed a lot with my team during these two weeks, with this ability to disconnect from the tournament. It helped me enormously to regain my feelings, to get closer to my 100%. Truly very precious moments.”

Where will Carlos Alcaraz play next?

After winning the biggest title of his season so far, Alcaraz is set to return to the court at Queen’s club, where he will begin the grass court season. The player will be looking to successfully defend his title after defeating Alex de Minaur in the 2023 final.

It was confirmed back in February that the World number two would be returning to the tournament before playing at Wimbledon, and he is excited to return.

“I’m excited to be heading back to the LTA’s Cinch Championships this year,” the three-time Grand Slam champion said.

“Winning the title in 2023 was very special for me and the perfect preparation for Wimbledon. I really enjoyed playing on the British grass courts and look forward to competing again this summer.”
