Alexander Zverev was unsuccessful in his title defence at the Munich Open, where he suffered an upset defeat in the semifinals.

Zverev lost to Flavio Cobolli in the final four of the ATP 500 tournament, falling in straight sets to the Italian, who was ultimately beaten by Ben Shelton in the final.

The German, who reached the semifinals of Monte-Carlo to kick off his clay swing, will now enter the second 2026 ATP Masters 1000 event on the surface: the Madrid Open.

Where will Alexander Zverev finish 2026 ranked?

Last year, Zverev suffered a fourth-round exit at the Madrid Open for the third season in a row, losing to Francisco Cerundolo.

A two-time champion in the Spanish capital, the 29-year-old may be staring down the barrel of another short-lived campaign following the draw for the 2026 edition of the tournament.

Alexander Zverev’s tough draw at the 2026 Madrid Open

Zverev will have a fairly comfortable start to his Madrid Open campaign, with an opening clash against either Mariano Navone or Nuno Borges.

Things quickly get difficult for him, however, as potential third-round assignments include Jakub Mensik and Ugo Humbert.

While he can avoid world number one Jannik Sinner until the final, Zverev’s quarter of the draw is filled with difficult opponents, including a red-hot Flavio Cobolli and young American star Learner Tien.

At the top of his quarter is Daniil Medvedev, who has a 14-8 career lead in the head to head against him.

Should he advance to the semifinals, Zverev may have to battle past last year’s champion Casper Ruud, third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime or even Alexander Bublik.

Of course, a potential final versus Sinner is the most difficult roadblock Zverev could face, with the Italian looking to clinch a fifth straight Masters crown.

Alexander Zverev’s results at ATP Masters 1000 events in 2026

Though he has not yet managed to capture a title, Zverev has enjoyed a much better start to the Masters series in 2026 compared to last year.

In 2025, Zverev suffered second-round exits at the Indian Wells Open and the Monte-Carlo Masters, and only went as far as the fourth round in Miami.

This season, however, the seven-time ATP Masters 1000 champion has reached three consecutive semifinals.

Zverev made the final four in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo, and has fallen to the same opponent each time: Sinner.

With Sinner on the opposite half of the draw in Madrid, Zverev will have a better chance of reaching his first Masters final since Paris in 2024.
