Alex de Minaur saw his 2025 season come to an end after being beaten by Jannik Sinner at the ATP Finals.

De Minaur was extremely dejected after losing to Lorenzo Musetti at the ATP Finals, continuing his losing record against top 10 players.

However, the Australian managed to turn things around, with De Minaur beating Taylor Fritz to secure his place in the semifinals of the ATP Finals.

De Minaur was beaten by Sinner in the semifinals, which continued his one-sided head-to-head against the Italian.

Now, former top 30 player Steve Johnson has spoken about the comments De Minaur made after his defeat to Sinner in Turin.

Steve Johnson says Alex de Minaur’s comments after losing to Jannik Sinner were ‘wild’

De Minaur has continually struggled against Sinner, with his defeat at the ATP Finals extending his deficit in the head-to-head to 13-0.

This has included De Minaur losing to Sinner four times this year, with the world number seven only winning two of the 31 sets he has played against the reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion.

Although he has lost every time he has played against Sinner, De Minaur claimed that he knows how to beat the Italian in his post-match press conference.

When discussing the ATP Finals as a whole, Johnson claimed that De Minaur’s comments were ‘wild’.

“I was thinking about it after the match. Everything has kind of been a letdown with these two guys since the French Open final,” Johnson said about the match at the ATP Finals between Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. “These guys played two of the most iconic finals of all time. I expect that level of drama every time they play one another.

“I mean, the tennis is phenomenal. There is no way you can question that. But unless it ends with a 7-6 in the third and guys are saving match points.

“I want to see more. Just because as a spectator on my couch I think it’s phenomenal, but I want to see more of what I saw in the French Open final from these guys.

“I am glad Sinner won, he is the best hard court indoor player. Of course it’s wild and I know we are never going to get it. I realise that. But it still makes me sad because I want to see it.

“I realise it’s never going to happen again, it was one of the best matches in the history of the game, because I want to see it. These guys are so good at playing one another and it’s fun to watch. Why can’t I root for that? I know it’s unrealistic. I 100% realise it’s unrealistic.

“But it’s amazing. Sinner indoors is a joke. I don’t know how you beat him. I think Demon maybe had a quote at the end of the tournament saying I think I know how to beat him, or there is a game plan there, which I thought was wild. He is one match away from winning this three years in a row, in 2023 he lost to Novak [Djokovic].”

Sam Querrey added, “You can you have a game plan and know how to beat him, but whether you execute it or not is a whole other thing.”

Before John Isner followed up by saying, “There is possibly a game plan to beat the guy but executing you have to be perfect.”

Alex de Minaur could have a real problem at Grand Slams next year

De Minaur produced some of his best tennis at the ATP Finals this year, but he still may be facing a big problem at the Grand Slams in 2025.

As the world number seven, De Minaur will likely face a top four ranked player if he reaches the quarterfinal at a major tournament again in 2026.

Will Alex de Minaur ever crack the ATP top five?

However, it is not only Sinner who he has an issue against, with Sinner winning only four of his 33 matches against the current top four ranked players.

Current top four ATP players Head-to-Head vs Alex de Minaur
Carlos Alcaraz5-0 Alcaraz
Jannik Sinner13-0 Sinner
Alexander Zverev8-3 Zverev
Novak Djokovic3-1 Djokovic

This has already been proven to be an issue, with De Minaur losing all six of his previous Grand Slam quarterfinals, including losses to both Sinner and Alexander Zverev.

De Minaur will either need to climb the rankings, or prove his point that he can actually beat the likes of Sinner.
