Alejandro Tabilo reached ATP finals on all three surfaces in 2024, during the best season of his career to date.

Tabilo shot to stardom in 2024 with a number of marquee results that saw him rise into the world’s top 20.

Perhaps the biggest of which came when Tabilo beat Novak Djokovic at the Italian Open in straight sets, on his way to the semi-finals.

His performances saw him selected for Team World at this year’s Laver Cup, where John McEnroe said he was impressed by Tabilo.

The 27-year-old picked up two titles on the ATP Tour in 2024, as he won both the Auckland Open and Mallorca Open, whilst finishing as runner-up in Santiago.

In doing so Tabilo became one of just three players to reach an ATP final on every surface in 2024, joining Taylor Fritz and Carlos Alcaraz.

Pretty good company for the Chilean star, who has now revealed which surface he prefers.

Alejandro Tabilo explains why grass is ‘by far’ his favorite surface on the ATP Tour

After a career-best year in 2024, where he achieved success on hard, clay, and grass, Tabilo was asked which of the three surfaces he prefers.

“By far, just by playing, I love grass,” he said.

“It’s always the season I am looking forward to and I always feel like I can play well on that surface.

“To have fun and play, definitely grass.”

The Chilean went on to explain that he is a big fan of the other two surfaces as well.

“Lately I have grown a lot fonder of clay,” he said.

“But I think hard court is always going to be my number one go-to just by how I grew up and how comfortable I feel on that surface.”

What was Alejandro Tabilo’s best surface in 2024?

It’s fair to say that Tabilo is comfortable on all three surfaces, but which surface did he actually have the most success on this year?

It’s fairly evident that grass has been the Chilean’s most fruitful surface in 2024, having won seven of his nine matches on the surface.

Tabilo lost to Tommy Paul at Queen’s before the American went on to lift the title, and to Fritz at Wimbledon, both very respectable defeats.

Over his entire career, things do look slightly different however, as it becomes clear that Tabilo made big strides on grass in 2024.

Looking back, Tabilo had been better on clay, but even worse on hard courts, whilst his grass performances were a lot more mixed.

He has definitely proven that he can achieve strong results on all three surfaces however, as he will look to take advantage of that in 2025 and rise further up the ATP rankings.

Tabilo will return to the court to try to defend his title in Auckland, with the tournament beginning on December 30.
