Coco Gauff stole headlines yesterday as she became embroiled in a heated exchange with a chair umpire.
Having called her serve out before Karolina Pliskova missed the return, the American challenged the decision. However, instead of giving her the point, she was instead ordered to retake the serve, sparking outrage.
‘Call the supervisor,’ she pleaded, over and over. However, her desperation and frustration fell on deaf ears.
Andy Roddick has now sought to weigh in on a wildly infuriating incident at the Dubai Tennis Championships.
What Andy Roddick said about Coco Gauff’s umpire argument
Having marvelled at her technique in training not too long ago, it is a sad state of affairs that his latest claim regards this controversy rather than an impressive comeback win against a massively in-form opponent.
It has understandably dominated interest, with many rushing to lambast the tyrannical umpire for his ignorance.
Despite being told to call the supervisor to query the rule, as is Gauff’s right, his blatant disregard for her frustration and the disregard for his job will likely result in him losing it.
Especially with more high-profile names giving weight to his failure, with Roddick now noting: ‘This is an absurd exchange for this umpire. 1. He’s completely wrong 2. He’s lying about being wrong. 3. She must have simply said 10 plus times, I’d like the supervisor.
‘That’s not a judgement call. He simply needed to honor that normal request and call the supervisor. Coco did well here. That’s before her opponent also not acknowledging truth (which she certainly didn’t have to do)’.
Coco Gauff needs to put this debacle behind her
As one of the more bizarre moments of 2024 thus far, it cannot be allowed to dominate Gauff’s thinking in the same way it has done the media.
After all, she has her next match already scheduled, which starts later today against Anna Kalinskaya.
The world number three boasts a very strong chance of claiming the title in Dubai this week, especially with Aryna Sabalenka, the woman who dumped her out of the Australian Open last month, having been knocked out herself early on.

Iga Swiatek remains her greatest threat, and a match-up between these two would be mouth-watering as the Polish star seeks to claim her second title in as many weeks.
The hope is that Gauff can dispel this major distraction and now move forward to bigger and better things.
