Coco Gauff was involved in a heated exchange with the chair umpire in her match earlier today.

The world number three was impressive as she came from a set down to defeat the in-form Karolina Pliskova, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

However, the clash was overshadowed an argument she shared mid-way through, in which she questioned a technical decision made by the umpire. Requesting the supervisor, it was a bizarre exchange where she was denied her right to question a rule.

But what exactly was it that had the US tennis star so heated, and did she have a case? We take a closer look…

What happened during Coco Gauff’s match earlier today?

It was the strangest turn of events after what was a tough first set for Gauff, in which she was admittedly blown away by her opponent.

Pliskova has already won the Winner’s Open in Romania in 2024, and did well to reach the semi-final of the Qatar Open just last week despite having no rest.

It seemed that fatigue eventually kicked in during today’s Dubai Tennis Championships clash, but not before she chuckled her way through Gauff’s heated exchange with the chair umpire.

Striking a serve that was called out, her Czech Republic opponent would miss the return before Gauff then challenged the call. Thinking her serve was in, the umpire insisted she retake her serve, whilst the 19-year-old instead claimed she should claim the point.

Accusing him of making a late call, what was most bizarre about the whole situation was how adamant he remained that he was correct, unwilling to call the supervisor despite numerous requests from Gauff.

‘You can’t deny me the supervisor. I’m gonna ask her what the rule is,’ she claimed, continuing to demand: ‘Call the supervisor!’

A tyrannical chair umpire

Such arrogance in the face of adversity drew frustration even from this viewer, just watching the action unfold on TV.

How the umpire could not admit any wrongdoing was blood-curdling, as he refused Gauff what is her right.

He has to allow the supervisor to come on should she request it, as the official ITF Tennis rules state: ‘When a player is of the opinion that a ruling by the Chair Umpire on a matter of Tennis Law is incorrect, he/she may appeal the ruling by notification to the Chair Umpire in a professional and non-abusive manner.

‘Thereupon, the Chair Umpire shall stop play, turn off all the microphones in the area of the Chair and immediately call for the ITF Supervisor/Referee.’

This was a blatant flouting of the rules, and even worse, an embarrassing show of egotism that could cost him his position.
