What happened when Andre Agassi took on Roger Federer in a match where the conditions were ‘as bad as it gets’

Andre Agassi and Roger Federer are two of the greatest tennis players of all time and have battled on several occasions.

Agassi made a claim about tennis that Federer didn’t agree with once, but regardless of their opinions on the game, it’s undeniable that they’re two of the best to have played.

American great Agassi has recently been practising with Holger Rune, and no doubt the eight-time Grand Slam winner has been passing on some very useful tips.

Agassi has been very complimentary about Federer and his status among the tennis greats, and the two served up some great matches when they played each other.

With the US Open in the latter stages, it’s coming up to the anniversary of a famous match between Agassi and Federer that left both players somewhat wind swept!

What happened when Agassi met Federer at the US Open in 2004

This match actually began on a Wednesday and finished on a Thursday, with the two players being dragged off the court due to torrential rain.

It was Federer who came through in five sets when play resumed, and although the rain had been replaced by sunshine, the wind was extremely strong.

Agassi was quizzed on the conditions after losing 3-6, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, and it would appear that the weather was up there with the worst conditions he ever played in.

He said in his press conference: “This is as bad as it gets. I mean, I think anything sort of more than this, there would have to be some serious consideration into postponing matches. I mean, at some point, if chairs are starting to blow over, that’s a problem, so… I mean, you could make it the players’ problems up to a certain point, then it gets a little absurd.

“Today was as extreme as it gets, where two players would have to deal with it. Yeah, it was one of those days that wasn’t going to lend to quality tennis. But the one element of tennis that is the most important still exists, which is that two players have to compete against each other and find a way, regardless of what the circumstances are. That’s what he did today.

I’ve always – I mean, nobody likes the wind. The question is, do you sort of like it more or less than your opponent?

“I can’t really speak to how he feels about playing in the wind, but I’ve always had good results in the wind just because my game is pretty adaptable to it. I don’t have a high ball toss, and I don’t have big swings, so I can play with some margin and percentages. But you still have to execute. So, you know, I would have enjoyed perfect conditions today because I thought the standard was pretty high last night and would have loved to have seen that continue.

“But, you know, it’s taken me 34 years to get myself to not complain about the circumstances and do my best to deal with them. This morning, when I woke up, it was about me dealing with it the best I could.”

Federer went on to win the US Open for the first time in 2004, beating Tim Henman and Lleyton Hewitt to lift the prize, and Agassi was left to rue the gale-force winds.

Federer got the better of Agassi in head-to-head

Although the two were always box office out on the court, it was Federer who had the better days against Agassi.

In fairness, Agassi was close to the end of his career when the pair started to do battle on a regular basis, and he wasn’t the only one who couldn’t live with Federer.

He did claim three wins over the Swiss star, however, and he always gave his opponent a tough test when they met on several occasions.

The pair served up some real classics over the year but the quality of tennis in this one from 2004 will constantly be overshadowed by the wind that both players had to contend with.
