Andre Agassi was tasked with naming the perfect ATP player and mentioned Roger Federer while doing so.

The American is an eight-time Grand Slam champion and was known for his pure ball-striking and excellent return of serve.

He battled Federer on multiple occasions in the latter part of his career while the Swiss Maestro was approaching the peak of his powers.

The 2025 Team World Laver Cup captain played against some of tennis’ greatest players throughout his 20-year career, and hearing him name his ideal ATP player was always going to be interesting.

What did Andre Agassi say about Roger Federer?

Andre Agassi appeared on the United States Tennis Association’s YouTube channel to discuss to build his perfect tennis player.

To do this, he would have to name the players he believes has the best serve, forehand, backhand, speed and mentality.

The former World number one picked John Isner’s serve, chose his own backhand and Carlos Alcaraz for speed.

He chose 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic for mentality, and it was the forehand where Agassi discussed Roger Federer and also mentioned former rival Pete Sampras.

While he gave Sampras some credit for his ability to hit the forehand on the run, he ultimately went with the Swiss Maestro for the best forehand.

“There are so many ways to judge a forehand but versatility, return, options, I would probably go Fed,” Agassi said.

“Although for me Pete [Sampras’s] running forehand was better than Fed’s. Just that one activity of just exploding and firing on a ball.”

What was Andre Agassi’s head-to-head record against Roger Federer?

Agassi’s career crossed over with the early years of Federer’s and they played 11 times in seven years, 10 of which came between 2001 and 2005.

Agassi won the pair’s first three meetings, one of which came in the Miami Open final, before Federer began to dominate.

The 43-year-old won the pair’s last eight meetings, all of which came on outdoor hard courts.

Their final meeting came in the 2005 US Open final, when Federer successfully defended his title by claiming a 6-3 2-6 7-6(1) 6-1 win.
