American female tennis is in fantastic shape right now, with Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula leading the way.

Both players enjoyed lengthy stays at the Miami Open, the latest WTA 1000 tournament in a busy schedule.

And after Pegula made it to the quarterfinals before losing to Elena Rybakina, home favorite Gauff reached the final, where she was beaten by top seed Aryna Sabalenka.

Sabalenka completed the Sunshine Double after her Indian Wells title, but it was another important tournament for American duo Gauff and Pegula.

But the best player among the two right now is certainly up for debate, with that very question having been posed to Tennis Gazette readers on TalkingPoints.

Tennis Gazette readers were asked who they think America’s top woman is currently, with Gauff winning the battle comfortably.

From more than 200 responses, Gauff boasts almost 62% of the vote, with Pegula claiming just over 38%.

The former is now taking a well-earned break after her brilliant Miami run, while the latter has quickly moved on to the clay-court swing.

Pegula is playing both singles and doubles at the Charleston Open, taking part in the latter format with Asia Muhammad.

The 32-year-old is a 10-time WTA champion with a career-high rank of three, while 22-year-old Gauff is a former world number two with 11 titles.

It is indeed the younger of the two American superstars who leads the way in the rankings, with Gauff the new WTA number three.

She has climbed one spot, replacing Iga Swiatek, while Pegula is unchanged in fifth and is closely followed in sixth by her compatriot Amanda Anisimova.

Three top 10 players highlight the strength of American women’s tennis right now, compared to just two on the ATP Tour.

And even then Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton find themselves eighth and ninth respectively after a disappointing Miami run for American men.

Back on the WTA Tour, teenage sensation Iva Jovic has continued her rapid rise by climbing to her career-high rank of 16th.

She is followed by Madison Keys in 18th and Emma Navarro in 25th, with Hailey Baptiste also climbing to her career-high rank of 33rd after reaching the Miami quarterfinals.

It is, however, Gauff who remains the American woman to catch right now, particularly given her history at this stage of the season.

The WTA calendar now enters a lengthy run on clay, concluding with the French Open, where Gauff is the defending champion.
