Bjorn Borg is, for many, one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

After all, not only was he supremely successful, but his rivalry with John McEnroe typified one of the most intriguing and entertaining rivalries in the sport’s history.

Sadly for both of them, neither amassed the requisite number of Grand Slam titles to truly be considered the greatest of all time.

Borg, however, seemed unbothered by that notion when asked about this particular debate last year.

In fact, he had already made up his mind.

Bjorn Borg names his tennis GOAT

Speaking in 2024, the Swedish superstar did not hold back in his assessment of this ever-present argument.

He simply stated: “As a sport, Djokovic is the greatest player to have ever played the game. And in second place comes Federer and Nadal, they’re tied for second place.

Who is the greatest male tennis player of all time?

“He’s 38 years old. It’s going to be tough with Sinner and Alcaraz, and some other players too. But still, he can do it.

“I hope he has the motivation to play at least another year.”

Novak Djokovic has outlined his plans to play at the 2028 Olympics, meaning Borg will likely be seeing his top-rated player around for quite a while longer.

Novak Djokovic’s retirement plans

Given his age and inability to claim that 25th Grand Slam title, as the competition only grows in quality, many have wondered about the future of this Serbian superstar and his place in the sport.

In fact, some pundits have even suggested that Djokovic might retire in 2026.

Would Rafael Nadal be the undisputed GOAT if not for injuries?

However, he has recently stated that, if fitness allows, he will remain present on tour for as long as possible.

Novak Djokovic claimed: “I’ve always had this throughout my life and my career, I’ve always had a schedule in my head for a year or more, what I want, how I want it.

“Since I’ve achieved absolutely all possible goals, I said about the 2028 Olympics because I wanted to play for so many more years. So maybe ending up at the Olympic Games with the Serbian flag, that would be nice.”
