Andre Agassi enjoyed a long and storied career in tennis, and despite claiming he once hated the sport, he still remains very much involved after his retirement.
However, fans are thankful that he remains so intertwined in the sport given how affable and insightful the 55-year-old is.
His talents have most recently extended into the Laver Cup, where he helped lead Team World to an unlikely victory in his debut as the team captain.
There, Agassi shared what he learned about modern players, returning to a unique competitive environment that was seldom present during his playing days.
Who is the youngster to watch out for on the ATP Tour in 2026?
Given the way in which Taylor Fritz spearheaded that title charge, it makes what Andre Agassi said just seven years earlier a little ironic, even if it is still technically true.
When Andre Agassi admitted he was worried for men’s American tennis
After all, the American tennis legend admitted he feared for the future of his male compatriots back in 2018 when speaking to Tennis365.
He spoke about ‘the lack of star names coming through in US tennis’, but insisted that ‘these things come in cycles’.

However, he worried that the weight of expectation in America might crush the next generation, continuing: “We are coming off some pretty interesting generations in American tennis. The bar was set pretty high by the guys for a couple of decades, but I see some real talent out there, and I think we are getting a little smarter in learning how to bridge the gap between the new kids coming through and the guys that have been around for a few years.
“The trouble for America is that we are a big country, and the expectation is always huge.
“At this moment, I see a situation in America where we have the advantage of volume of players and numbers playing the game compared to other countries, but we don’t have the focused ability to develop the best talent.
“This is a global sport and I appreciate that America is important for any industry, but this sport of ours is growing at a rapid pace without American stars at the top of the men’s game.
Who will win the 2026 Australian Open?
“That said, it would be nice to have a little more interest from the American audience.”
Who is America’s best hope of a men’s American Grand Slam champion?
Naturally, Fritz has spearheaded the current crop of American men in their seemingly never-ending quest for a Grand Slam title.
He came closest last year, when he reached the final of the 2024 US Open but was well beaten by the unstoppable Jannik Sinner.
He is also a Wimbledon semi-finalist, and remains their best hope at unsettling the ATP Tour’s ongoing duopoly.

Elsewhere, Ben Shelton is likely the next best chance of achieving that feat, having also reached two Grand Slam semi-finals and, crucially, being five years younger than Fritz.
He has so much time to develop into a player capable of unsettling the world’s very best, and has a unique game style that will always make him a threat.
Frances Tiafoe is another who cannot be discounted, but has regressed massively since reaching two Grand Slam semi-finals in three years.
