Gael Monfils has made a career out of doing things that people would not expect him to.
Monfils announced that he would retire from tennis next year, after playing on the ATP Tour for 21 years.
There has been a big reaction to the Frenchman’s announcement, including Novak Djokovic sending a message to Monfils.
With Monfils now looking ahead to his life after hanging up his racket, it has brought up some interesting comments he made last year after his post-tennis plans.

What Gael Monfils said he wanted to do after retiring from professional tennis
Monfils is currently 39 years old and there have been discussions about when he will end his career for some time.
When speaking to Express Sport last year about his career plans after he retires from tennis, Monfils was asked if he planned to go into coaching like many other former players do.
However, Monfils revealed that he actually intended to go down a more unusual route for a former tennis player and instead wanted to move into the world of finance.
“I want to work in a financial way. I want to work in a bank,” Monfils said in December last year.
“I’ve done some internships when I was out of the court, I’ve always been a bit curious about that side and then I’ve been reading a lot and I tried it out a little bit and then I had an opportunity to work a little bit in a private bank.
“I saw very curious people, very interesting people who gave me this passion and I think I really want to try it after my career.”

What will be the final tournament of Gael Monfils’ career?
In his lengthy retirement statement, Monfils revealed that he intended to finish his career at the end of the 2026 season.
While he did not mention a specific tournament, it seems likely that Monfils’ last tournament will come at his home Masters 1000 event in Paris.
Not only will the Parisian crowd be able to offer Monfils the farewell that he deserves, but he is also a two-time former finalist at the indoor hard court tournament.
Monfils made history earlier this year when he won his 13th ATP title and has revealed his hope to add at least one more trophy to his collection.
Regardless of how Monfils’ career comes to an end, he will always be one of the most popular players on the ATP Tour.
