Andy Roddick made a Grand Slam final each year from 2003 to 2006, and was looking to continue his streak heading into the next season.

Roddick won the US Open in 2003, made the Wimbledon final in the two years that followed, and reached the championship match at Flushing Meadows in 2006.

He kicked off 2007 with his sixth career campaign at the Australian Open, where he had reached the semifinals twice before.

After wins over Marat Safin, Mario Ancic, and Mardy Fish, Roddick advanced to the final four in Melbourne once again, where he met the man he simply couldn’t beat at majors.

Andy Roddick’s miserable loss to Roger Federer at the Australian Open

He would go toe-to-toe with the first seed, Roger Federer, who at the time led him 4-0 at Grand Slams.

That record quickly increased to 5-0 after Federer dominated Roddick in the 2007 Australian Open final, winning 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.

In his press conference after the match, Roddick said: “I was playing well coming in [to the match], if you would have told me this beforehand, I didn’t foresee it.”

When asked how he felt at the end of the match, he responded: “It was frustrating. You know, it was miserable. It sucked. It was terrible. Besides that, it was fine.

“I caught an absolute beating tonight. There’s no doubt about it. There’s no two ways about it.

“You deal with it, and you go back to the drawing board. You act like a professional, and you try to keep working hard.”

Roger Federer’s lopsided head-to-head record against Andy Roddick

In 24 meetings on the ATP Tour against Federer, Roddick was only able to win three matches from 2001 to 2012.

After losing their first four clashes, he managed to defeat the Swiss legend in the semifinals of the Canadian Open in 2003.

Roddick then lost 11 consecutive bouts to Federer before clinching a second victory over him at the Miami Open in 2008.

Six more defeats later, in their last career faceoff in 2012, the American overcame his opponent for a third time in Miami.

At Grand Slam events, Federer was undefeated against Roddick, winning all eight of their faceoffs in major tournaments.
