Andy Murray is one of the greatest sports personalities to ever represent Great Britain.

Murray managed to scale the dizzy heights of world number one, whilst he also managed to win three Grand Slam titles in an era where Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were all in their prime.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga recently admitted he struggled against Murray, and the fierce competitor was always the type of player who needed scraping off the court.

Murray retired at the Olympics last year and now, he’s spending a lot of time on the golf course chancing his arm at another sport away from tennis.

With the Paris Masters starting this week, Murray will undoubtedly have some fond memories of the tournament, having won it back in 2016.

Andy Murray wins Paris Masters in 2016

Murray came up against John Isner in the final of the Paris Masters back in 2016 and although he was the heavy favourite, Murray was still forced to find his best form.

Murray came through 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 after gaining a walkover in the semifinal with Milos Raonic picking up an injury during his quarterfinal against Tsonga.

It proved to be a good win for Murray and came during a period where he was showcasing his best form on the tour, having also won Wimbledon that year.

Murray only managed one Paris Masters title during his career and after the win, he announced what his next major step was for the sake of his career.

What Murray said he wanted to do after Paris Masters win

Murray managed three major titles, but in fairness, he would have won a lot more in pretty much any other era that didn’t include Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

After winning in Paris, Murray was asked about his desires for the 2017 campaign and he admitted that the Australian Open was a tournament that he desperately wanted to win.

He said in his press conference: “I have no idea. It’s so far away, really. I mean, so much can happen and change in a small space of time, as I have found out a number of times during my career.

“These last few months, you know, no one would have expected what I have done the last few months in the summer, really, or after the French Open.

“So this was unexpected to me, as well. I didn’t expect it. You know, I have also gone through a period where I had the best sort of year of my career, where I had won the US Open, the Olympics, and Wimbledon. I think I was in the final of the Australian Open, as well. And then after that, I had back surgery, you know, a few months later.

“So I have no idea what place I’m going to be in five or six months’ time. But, yeah, obviously I’d love to win the Australian Open because it’s sort of the next major goal, beginning of next year, because I have been close a number of times and I have never quite done it. Obviously, I’d love to try and win that.”

Sadly, Murray never managed to get over the line at the Australian Open, despite reaching five finals in Melbourne.

Djokovic was responsible for beating him in four of those five finals, with the other one coming at the hands of Federer in his first foray to the final in 2010.

Still, Murray achieved a remarkable feat during his career and winning three Grand Slam titles will be something he looks back on with a great deal of pride.
