Nick Kyrgios has enjoyed a fairly successful career, but it’s fair to say he could have won a lot more on the ATP Tour.

The Australian has claimed a total of seven titles since turning professional in 2013, however none of them have been above ATP 500 level.

Kyrgios has made finals at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open, but never managed to get over the line at the very biggest tournaments.

Many have been critical of the 30-year-old in the past, including legends of the game such as John McEnroe and Rafael Nadal.

And in 2018, Roger Federer had his say on what he thought was holding Kyrgios back.

Roger Federer’s comments on Nick Kyrgios in 2018

As per Sky Sports that year, Federer said of Kyrgios: “I think it’s really up to him where he wants to go and what his potential really holds.

“We don’t really know, and I don’t think he really knows exactly what his potential is.

“Only through understanding work ethic and scheduling, creating the right team around himself, only then can you unlock the potential really.”

“But there is still a process in place that he needs to do like any other player needs to go through in order to be successful.”

What Todd Woodbridge had to say about Nick Kyrgios

Australian doubles great Todd Woodbridge had a slightly more positive view on his compatriot Kyrgios.

He said: “I think with Nick when he’s fresh he plays great, and it’s about managing schedules as much as anything, so that he plays no more than three weeks in a row and then he gets away from it.

“That can be difficult on tour because you have commitments that the tour say you have to play certain events.

“When he’s fresh we don’t see him ‘leave the court’ so to speak where his eyes wander; when he’s playing fresh he’s got the opponents in his sights.”

Kyrgios’ last singles appearance on the ATP Tour came at the Brisbane International, where he was beaten in his opening match by Aleksandar Kovacevic.
