The 2025 Davis Cup Finals are well underway as the teams battle it out for supremacy in Bologna.
Eight sides: Italy, Austria, Spain, Czechia, Belgium, France, Germany, and Argentina travelled to Italy, but only one will lift the Davis Cup title on Sunday, November 23.
Over 150 teams have entered the competition throughout its 125-year history, a staggering number, given the original format of the event.

Back in 1900, the first-ever Davis Cup took place, as Great Britain met the USA in Boston, at Longwood Cricket Club.

Davis was one of the best American tennis players of his generation, reaching the final of the 1898 US Open, losing out in four sets to Malcolm Whitman.
He was a member of the Harvard University tennis team, and along with three of his teammates, came up with the idea of challenging the British to a match in 1899.
Stumping up his own money to purchase a silver trophy, Davis helped create what was then known as the ‘International Lawn Tennis Challenge’.

Davis was joined by Whitman and Holcombe Ward on Team USA, while Ernest Black, Arthur Gore, and Herbert Roper Barrett lined up for the British Isles.
The Americans were dominant in Boston, winning 3-0, as they became the inaugural winners of the competition.

| 3 | Dwight Davis/Holcombe Ward (USA) | Ernest Black/Herbert Roper Barrett (British Isles) | USA (2-0) British Isles |
Davis returned for the second edition of the tournament in 1902, but only played one match, suffering defeat in the doubles.

He didn’t return to the team for the 1903 tournament, as the format soon changed.
As the British Isles won in 1903, they hosted the 1904 edition, which was the first to feature more than two teams.
Belgium and France were invited, as were America, but as the 1900 and 1902 champions failed to submit a team before the deadline, just three teams fought for the title at Wimbledon.
The Brits won again, as they did in 1905 and 1906, before Australasia won their first title in 1907.
Great Britain/British Isles, the USA, Australasia, and France shared the trophy until the competition was suspended due to the outbreak of the Second World War.

Davis sadly passed after a long battle with illness in 1945, aged 66, and the competition was renamed in his honor when it resumed a year later.
110 years after his death, the Davis Cup is still going strong, although neither Great Britain nor the United States qualified for the 2025 finals…
2025 Davis Cup Finals – The story so far
In the months leading up to the finals, Italy looked like the favorites, having won the title in 2023 and 2024.

However, following the withdrawals of Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, the ‘three-peat’ didn’t seem quite so realistic.
That didn’t stop them from winning their opener, however, as Italy took down Austria without too much trouble to reach the last four.
Also winning 2-0, Belgium beat their neighbours, France, to set up a semifinal clash with the host nation, Italy.
On the other half of the draw, Spain and Germany both battled back from a 1-0 deficit to advance in classic Davis Cup ties.
The semifinals are now set, with just four teams left in the competition.
- SF 1 – Italy vs Belgium (Friday, November 21)
- SF 2 – Spain vs Germany (Saturday, November 22)
Only time will tell who will emerge victorious, but you certainly won’t want to miss any of the action.
