Martina Navratilova enjoyed a stunning tennis career, securing huge success in both singles and doubles.

Navratilova is among the all-time greats, with only four players having claimed more Grand Slam singles titles than the legendary figure.

She is joined on 18 by Chris Evert, with Navratilova having won Grand Slam titles at all four major tournaments.

Navratilova officially retired at the 2006 US Open, having previously called time on her glittering career back in 1994.

Martina Navratilova retires after 2006 US Open success with Bob Bryan

She fittingly bowed out as a Grand Slam champion, winning the US Open mixed doubles title alongside fellow doubles hero Bob Bryan.

The iconic duo defeated Kveta Peschke and Martin Damm in the final in 2006, winning 6–2, 6–3 in New York.

Unsurprisingly given her retirement, Navratilova dominated the press conference in the aftermath of the success.

And despite the WTA star hammering home the message that she was definitely hanging up her racket, Bryan jokingly asked her: “We have to defend our title, don’t we?”

Bob Bryan’s Grand Slam mixed doubles finals

Much like Serena Williams and Venus Williams dominated the doubles scene on the WTA Tour for some time, Bob and his brother Mike Bryan did the same on the ATP Tour.

The American duo reached a huge 30 Grand Slam doubles finals together, from which they claimed 16 titles.

They triumphed multiple times at each of the four Grand Slam events, with both brothers reaching number one in the world doubles rankings.

Bob also managed to reach nine Grand Slam mixed doubles finals in his career, winning seven, including that 2006 success with Navratilova.

Bob Bryan’s Grand Slam mixed doubles finals

The American legend won a huge 119 doubles titles throughout his career, in which he claimed well over 1,000 wins.

Navratilova was, of course, also a hugely accomplished doubles player, winning a mammoth 177 WTA titles in that format.

While she has moved into broadcasting following her retirement, Bryan has recently been serving as the captain of the USA Davis Cup team.
