Coco Gauff had a Roland Garros to forget, having lasted just three matches in Paris.

The WTA superstar started very brightly at Roland Garros, beating Taylor Townsend and Mayar Sherif, both in straight sets.

But Gauff suffered a shock Roland Garros exit in just the third round of the tournament, where she fell to Anastasia Potapova.

And it is because of that major upset, and indeed the nature of it, that Gauff was one of the biggest disappointments of the entire event.

Which player disappointed you the most at the French Open?

There are plenty to choose from…

Coco Gauff was one of the biggest disappointments at Roland Garros

The fourth seed at the clay-court Grand Slam, Gauff was backed to compete for the Roland Garros title, and understandably so.

But she fell well short of that achievement, which is a major surprise given that she won the tournament in 2025.

In fact, Gauff claimed the most WTA clay wins in 2025, including a special comeback win over Aryna Sabalenka in the Roland Garros final.

But a very disappointing title defence followed this year, much to the disappointment of the two-time finalist and her fans.

Significantly, the overwhelming favorite against 28th seed Potapova, Gauff lost her composure and her lead as she was beaten 6-4, 6-7(1-7), 4-6.

Emphasizing the disappointment and the shock was the fact that she had only just reached the Italian Open final beforehand, which she lost to Elina Svitolina.

Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz among Roland Garros disappointments

Notably, Gauff was far from the only American disappointment at the tournament, having arguably been outshone by many compatriots in that regard.

But top of that very unwanted list are her WTA rival Jessica Pegula and ATP counterpart Taylor Fritz.

Both suffered shock first round exits, with the former losing to Kimberly Birrell and the latter losing to Nishesh Basavareddy.

Birrell and Basavareddy both went on to suffer second round exits, as did ATP number one and top seed Jannik Sinner.

Sinner was beaten by Juan Manuel Cerundolo, with his exit representing one of the biggest shocks in Grand Slam history.

The Italian was the overwhelming favorite to lift the trophy, but his early upset paved the way for Alexander Zverev to do exactly that, while Mirra Andreeva won the women’s title.
