What Andre Agassi once said about Holger Rune’s tennis has just become very interesting as they begin working together

Holger Rune appears to be making changes to his game, following a disappointing Wimbledon campaign in which he suffered a first-round exit.

The 22-year-old crashed out of the championships in his opening match against Nicolas Jarry, matching his worst finish in SW19.

Recently, Rune has been spotted training with Andre Agassi ahead of the Washington Open, which begins on the 23rd of July.

Agassi, who previously coached Novak Djokovic and Grigor Dimitrov, is reportedly working with the Dane on a three-day trial period.

Should the two choose to make the player-coach relationship permanent, the American will look to back up comments he made about Rune in 2022.

Andre Agassi’s comments about Holger Rune a year ago

In an interview with ‘US Today Sports’ that year, Agassi was asked to predict the next great rivalry in tennis going forward.

The eight-time Grand Slam champion initially responded with the obvious answer of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, which has aged well over the last 12 months.

But Agassi then mentioned another player he thought should be challenging those two.

He said: “I love Rune as well. I don’t like the word underachiever, but you give me Rune’s game right now, I feel like I will step out there and make an argument for being a threesome instead of a twosome in that discussion.”

Once tipped as the third star to make up the new ‘big three’ alongside Alcaraz and Sinner, Rune’s game hasn’t taken off in the way he would have hoped.

At majors, he has only made three quarter-finals appearances, reaching the last eight at Roland Garros in his first two campaigns there and again at Wimbledon in 2023.

Since then, however, he has failed to make it past the fourth round in each of the next eight Grand Slam tournaments.

As he enters his fifth US Open campaign, Rune will hope to reach the second round at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2022, possibly with Agassi in his corner.
