American tennis is in a strong place, as several players look ready to compete for Grand Slam titles.
In 2024, Taylor Fritz reached the final of the US Open, becoming the first American man to qualify for a major final since Andy Roddick in 2009.
Coming up short against Jannik Sinner in the final, Fritz was unable to win his first Grand Slam, but showed he can compete with the very best.
Fritz isn’t the only American to have impressed at the Grand Slam level, as 22-year-old Ben Shelton continues to shine at the sport’s four biggest tournaments.
Now a three-time Grand Slam semifinalist, Shelton looks ready to break through and win his first major before too long.
The likes of Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe have also impressed, although there are two more youngsters who are going under the radar, who may well have Grand Slam-winning potential.
Alex Michelsen and Learner Tien could have Grand Slam potential
20-year-old Alex Michelsen and 19-year-old Learner Tien aren’t household names yet, but that might not be the case for much longer.
Michelsen has already qualified for three ATP finals and has been ranked as high as 30th in the world.

At the 2025 Australian Open, Michelsen enjoyed his career-best Grand Slam result, reaching the fourth round, where he lost out to home-favorite Alex de Minaur in straight sets.
Michelsen’s fellow American, Tien, also enjoyed his career-best Grand Slam result in Melbourne, advancing to the last 16 before losing to Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego.
En route to the fourth round, Tien picked up his first top-ten win of the season, defeating Daniil Medvedev in round two.
The teenager has picked up three more top-ten wins since, as he continues to impress against the best players on the ATP Tour.

Securing wins over Medvedev and Alexander Zverev in his first full season on tour is an incredible achievement, highlighting Tien’s immense talent.
He and Michelsen both have the potential to achieve great things in the sport, especially at the Grand Slam level, but they’ll first focus on their US Open preparations.
Both Tien and Michelsen have made impressive starts to their Canadian Open campaigns, advancing to the third round without dropping a set.
If Michelsen were to upset Lorenzo Musetti in the third round and Tien were to take down Reilly Opelka, the pair would meet for the second time in their careers (Michelsen beat Tien in Houston 2025) with a place in the quarterfinals up for grabs.

The strength of depth within American tennis is arguably better than ever before, as the United States currently has 13 players ranked inside the world’s top 100.
With more players ranked in the top 100 than any other country, there is no denying we are currently witnessing a ‘golden generation’ of American tennis.

Whether any of those 13 players can win a Grand Slam for the United States remains to be seen, but it will certainly be worth looking out for.
They’ll have their next shot at major glory in New York at the US Open, which begins on Sunday, August 24.
