The 2025 tennis season is rapidly nearing its conclusion, with many eyes already on 2026 after the end of the Davis Cup.

But first Italy will be celebrating their superb success in Bologna, having just clinched the Davis Cup for the third successive year.

Notably, the home nation triumphed without the presence of Jannik Sinner, who opted not to represent his side this year.

Sinner had played a key role in their two previous successes, but is currently lying low after a busy season on the ATP Tour.

He claimed a huge six titles throughout 2025, bettered only by the eight of world number one Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz also decided to skip the Davis Cup, with Spain intriguingly also managing to reach the final despite the absence of their star man.

Instead, the likes of lesser-known talents Jaume Munar and Pablo Carreno Busta stepped up for the Spaniards in Bologna.

They did, however, fall just short against the brilliance of the Italians, led by Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli.

Will Jannik Sinner regret not playing at the Davis Cup after Italy’s win?

But it was a superb spectacle for all involved, particularly the champions and the majority of the sell-out crowd of 10,000 at the SuperTennis Arena.

The thrilling final proved Italy’s dominance at the event, but also proved that men’s tennis can indeed thrive without Sinner and Alcaraz.

Fans should be crying out for a challenger to the duo in 2026, having just witnessed another year of dominance from the pair.

But there was at least huge drama and constant excitement this week in Bologna, which should allow tennis fans to relax and breathe a sigh of relief in the knowledge that there is plenty to get stuck into even with no Alcaraz or no Sinner, or neither.

Will Jannik Sinner be disappointed about missing the Davis Cup?

Many fans would have expected Sinner to represent Italy once more, having been a crucial figure behind their 2023 and 2024 titles.

But that is one of a handful of reasons why the Italian favorite shouldn’t be disappointed about missing this year’s event.

He’s already tasted glory at the tournament, with his absence this year allowing the likes of Cobolli to step into the limelight.

Italian fans would admittedly have been desperate to see their superstar in action, but they still ended the week on a huge high.

Sinner has congratulated the Italian Davis Cup team, having undoubtedly kept a close eye on the action, but he evidently made the correct call to miss out.

Instead, he’s been able to continue his recovery immediately after the ATP Finals, which should play a key role in another strong run at the Australian Open in 2026.
