Novak Djokovic may have just exited Indian Wells, but he’s just proven why he remains a crucial aspect of the modern tennis era.

Djokovic was beaten by Jack Draper in the round of 16 at Tennis Paradise, with the pair putting on a real show for the crowd in California.

Above all else, it was a phenomenal effort from the 38-year-old ATP legend, who can leave Indian Wells with his head held high.

He was beaten only by the defending champion, with Draper having definitely been motivated by playing his idol Djokovic, who is still hugely important to tennis.

Novak Djokovic remains key for tennis despite Indian Wells exit

Over on the WTA Tour, Alexandra Eala is a huge superstar, constantly drawing huge crowds, which is a boost to tournament organizers and the sport in general.

But the same can definitely be said of Djokovic, who, despite his age and the winding down of his career, is a constant attraction for tennis fans.

And the feeling is quickly reciprocated by the Serbian, who continuously delivers every time he steps onto the court.

Djokovic often defies logic with his displays at this stage of his career, having now been involved in two of the best matches of 2026.

His Australian Open semifinal with Jannik Sinner will live long in the memory, as will his Indian Wells meeting with Draper.

Fans in Melbourne and California were treated to two epics, remarkably involving a player who will soon turn 39.

He clearly remains crucial for sheer entertainment value but also for growing the sport, which shouldn’t be on his shoulders but inevitably is.

Put simply, tennis wouldn’t be where it is now without Djokovic, and he will leave a huge hole in the sport when he eventually decides to retire.

Another important aspect of his latest appearance was his attitude off the court, having once again shown grace in defeat.

Djokovic was full of praise for Draper, who is one of a number of younger players who should be looking up to the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

They should be doing their utmost to achieve even 1% of his success on the court, but also follow his example off it.

He’s much loved by fans everywhere, and is always keen to share fantastic insight into various areas of his life and approach to tennis when given the chance.

Back on the court, and Djokovic even gave Indian Wells fans another reason to cheer, taking on the doubles event with Stefanos Tsitsipas.
