Naomi Osaka has quickly moved on to the Japan Open in Osaka after an early exit at the Wuhan Open.

Osaka impressively knocked out Leylah Fernandez in her opener at the Wuhan Open, where she was the 11th seed.

But the former WTA number one then lost to Linda Noskova, with her focus now on fellow Japanese ace Sonobe Wakana on home soil.

The Japan Open continues the busy schedule in women’s tennis, with Osaka once again joined in the field by the likes of Fernandez and Noskova.

Other notable names alongside the world number 16 include Katie Boulter, Bianca Andreescu, Alexandra Eala and Maria Sakkari.

Naomi Osaka presented with major opportunity as the WTA season draws to a close

Osaka is, however, the top seed at the Japan Open, which returned to the WTA Tour in 2023 after a three-year hiatus.

And the four-time Grand Slam champion has been presented with a big opportunity at the WTA 250 by the mere fact she is the top seed, with a lengthy run subsequently very much on the cards.

Osaka hasn’t won on the WTA Tour since 2021, although she did triumph at the WTA 125 Saint Malo earlier this year, but that is not recognised among her seven WTA titles.

She now has the chance to clinch silverware on a bigger platform, which would help bring a fine end to her latest season, which is rapidly drawing to a close.

Why Naomi Osaka can be confident of winning the Japan Open

Not only is Osaka the top seed at the Japan Open, but she has history at the event which should provide her with plenty of confidence.

She won the tournament in 2019, claiming a straight-set victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, having also been the top seed back then.

It was her first title since the 2019 Australian Open, with the champion saying afterwards: “I just wanted to say it’s really special for me to win here.

“This is the city where I was born, and honestly I think that gave me the power to play constantly, match after match.”

Again for Osaka this week, the fans will be on her side, which may help push her over the line to an important win.
