Joao Fonseca has gone crashing out of the Australian Open, losing his very first match at the Grand Slam.
The Brazilian ATP superstar was defeated 4-6, 6-2, 1-6, 2-6 by Eliot Spizzirri in Melbourne, where he was the 28th seed.
Fonseca has no Australian Open regrets, having entered the tournament despite admittedly not being at 100%.
He stole the headlines at the Australian Open this time last year, defeating Andrey Rublev on his Grand Slam debut.

Now in stark contrast, Fonseca has just made unwanted career history, having lost in the first round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
After shocking Rublev in Melbourne at the start of 2025, he also won his opening matches at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
But his current fitness struggles strongly suggest that a break is needed for the youngster, who is still only just 19 years old.
The Brazilian needs to get back to full strength, and he certainly shouldn’t rush that recovery given his age.
While he will be desperate to get back to winning ways immediately, there’s certainly no shame in taking a backseat for a brief period.

He’s also managed to climb as high as 24th in the world rankings, a number he seems destined to surpass sooner rather than later.

So while he will be disappointed by such an early exit, there is no need for worry and definitely no need for panic.
The rest of the ATP Tour and indeed tennis fans will be well aware of his ability and his future promise, but any burnout or overexertion at this crucial stage could be very costly in his pursuit of success.
Just as patience is required with fans concerning their high hopes for the youngster, Fonseca requires patience with his game and more importantly with his body.
