Jannik Sinner is back on his preferred surface and is off to a dominant start in his title defence at the Cincinnati Open.

The Italian wasted no time in his opening match at the ATP Masters 1000 event, sweeping aside Daniel Elahi Galan in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

He’s competing in his first tour-level event since his successful grass season, in which Sinner clinched a maiden Wimbledon title after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

As the four-time Grand Slam champion enters the latter stages of the season, he is closing in on an accomplishment no man has achieved in nearly two decades.

Jannik Sinner’s chance at making history at the US Open

If he had capitalised on just one of the three championship points he had at Roland Garros, the 23-year-old could have been knocking on the door of a calendar Grand Slam heading into the US hard-court swing.

Though it wasn’t to be for Sinner in Paris, he has still picked up two major crowns in 2025, the first of which was a successful title defence at the Australian Open.

His victory in Melbourne marked a third consecutive hard-court Grand Slam triumph, having emerged victorious down under in 2024 and at Flushing Meadows last September.

Should Sinner hoist the title again in New York this year, he’ll become the first man in 18 years to go back-to-back at both the Australian Open and the US Open.

The last player to manage the feat was Roger Federer, who won both championships in 2006 and defended them in 2007.

At the moment, not many players can match Sinner’s level, and on the current surface, he is the outright favourite to go all the way at the fourth major of the year.

The last time Jannik Sinner lost a match at a hard-court major

Sinner’s undefeated streak at hard-court Grand Slams has lasted nearly two years, with his last loss coming at the US Open in 2023.

That year, he was fresh off securing a maiden Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open and made a strong start in the Big Apple, winning his first two matches in straight sets.

After defeating former champion Stan Wawrinka in the third round, he came up against Alexander Zverev in round four.

The two endured a five-set thriller at Arthur Ashe Stadium, but ultimately the German came out on top in their bout.
