Australian players excelled in the first round of Indian Wells qualifying.
73% of Australians won their opening matches at Indian Wells.
It’s been a fantastic start to the tournament for Australia, and that’s before their great hope, Alex de Minaur, has even hit a ball.

The number-six seed isn’t exactly a favorite to win the tournament, but looks a safe bet to make a deep run.
And with other Australians easing the pressure on De Minaur, perhaps he could go all the way…
Australian success could push Alex de Minaur to Indian Wells glory
Recently, De Minaur has flown the flag for Australia, and he’s done it well.
However, despite a short-lived breakthrough from Alexei Popyrin (Won 2024 Canadian Open), he’s been the only player on either tour picking up big wins.

It shouldn’t be underestimated just how much of an effect that will have had on De Minaur.
The pressure on his shoulders is immense, as the nation’s hopes live and die with the 27-year-old.
That may not be the case in Indian Wells, though, as eight Aussies won their first-round qualifiers.
Australian players in Indian Wells Q1
| Australian player | ATP/WTA | Opponent | Result | Score |
| Rinky Hijikata | ATP | Leandro Reidi (SUI) | WIN | 7-5, 6-3 |
| Aleksandar Vukic | ATP | Stefano Travaglia (ITA) | WIN | 7-6, 7-6 |
| Dane Sweeny | ATP | Andrew Johnson (USA) | WIN | 6-2, 6-1 |
| Christopher O’Connell | ATP | Billy Harris (GBR) | WIN | 6-4, 6-3 |
| Tristan Schoolkate | ATP | Alex Bolt (AUS) | WIN | 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 |
| Alex Bolt | ATP | Tristan Schoolkate (AUS) | LOSS | 6-3, 6-7, 4-6 |
| Emerson Jones | WTA | Nikola Bartunkova (CZE) | LOSS | 2-6, 2-6 |
| Priscilla Hon | WTA | Renata Zarazua (MEX) | WIN | 7-5, 7-6 |
| Maddison Inglis | WTA | Lulu Sun (NZL) | LOSS | 5-7, 3-6 |
| Storm Hunter | WTA | Sinja Kraus (AUT) | WIN | 7-6, 6-4 |
| Talia Gibson | WTA | Madison Brengle (USA) | WIN | 6-0, 7-6 |
All eight players still need to win another match to secure their spots in the main draw, but it’s looking good.
The more Aussies, the merrier, as far as De Minaur is concerned.
Why?
Well, if just one of the eight players listed above were to make a run to, let’s say, the fourth round at Indian Wells, they’d share the spotlight with De Minaur.
Not every headline back home would be focused on who De Minaur is playing next, and whether he can win the title, but they’d also touch on a newcomer making waves in California.
Will Alex de Minaur ever crack the ATP top five?
With some of the pressure off, perhaps the Australian number one would play with a bit more freedom, allowing him to go all the way and win his first Masters 1000 title.
Easier said than done, though.
De Minaur hasn’t always played his best tennis at Indian Wells, and he hasn’t been helped by the draw, either.
Alex de Minaur’s Indian Wells record and 2026 draw
Despite his success elsewhere on tour, De Minaur has never reached the quarterfinals of Indian Wells.
Alex de Minaur’s Indian Wells record
- 2017 Indian Wells – Lost in Q2 to Radu Albot
- 2018 Indian Wells – Lost in 2R to Juan Martin del Potro
- 2019 Indian Wells – Lost in 2R to Marcos Giron
- 2021 Indian Wells – Lost in 4R to Stefanos Tsitsipas

- 2023 Indian Wells – Lost in 2R to Marton Fucsovics
- 2024 Indian Wells – Lost in 4R to Alexander Zverev
- 2025 Indian Wells – Lost in 4R to Francisco Cerundolo
He’s come close, but lost in the fourth round, four times.
If he wants to avoid the same fate in 2026, he may need to take down his fellow top-10 star, Alexander Bublik.

Unfortunately for De Minaur, things won’t get any easier if he does reach the quarterfinals.
He could have to play and beat Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Jannik Sinner in back-to-back-to-back matches to clinch the title.
It sounds impossible, and it probably is.
But if he could upset the odds and the top three players in men’s tennis, De Minaur would surely become the most deserving Indian Wells champion of all time.
Receiving a BYE into round two, De Minaur will play Sebastian Korda or Francisco Comesana later this week.
