Frances Tiafoe and Learner Tien are set to do battle on the ATP Tour for the first time in over two years at the Delray Beach Open.

Tiafoe has enjoyed a strong start to his campaign at the ATP 250 event in Florida, having earned consecutive wins over Rinky Hijikata and Zachary Svajda.

Tien, on the other hand, received a bye in round one and narrowly came through his second-round bout with Miomir Kecmanovic.

The all-American affair between the two stars will be their second ever, following their maiden clash at the US Open in 2023.

A lot has changed in their respective career trajectories since then, which Tiafoe commented on ahead of their meeting.

Frances Tiafoe previews his clash with Learner Tien in Delray Beach

As per the ATP Tour website, Tiafoe said of Tien: “I played him in the first round of the [US] Open a few years ago.

“Obviously, he’s a totally different player. I’m excited to get up and play him. It’s funny how things turn.

“Now I’m the underdog in that match, so I’m happy to get out there and play against him. I’m just happy to be competing.

“It feels good competing. It’s nice to put some matches together. Happy I get to play another match tomorrow. It’s going to be another tough opponent, so excited to get out there and compete.”

Tiafoe emerged victorious in their first-round match at the 2023 US Open, beating him in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, 6-1.

Tien, ranked 700th in the world at the time, was the youngest player in the men’s draw at Flushing Meadows that year, aged just 17, and has since come on leaps and bounds.

In his first full trip around the ATP Tour last year, he clinched his first title in Metz and made the final of the China Open, falling to Jannik Sinner.

Off the back of his breakthrough season, Tien started 2026 with an impressive campaign at the Australian Open, where he made the quarterfinals; his best major finish so far.

While Tien has continued to improve, Tiafoe has ultimately regressed.

Once 10th in the world, Tiafoe has failed to win a title since 2023, and has seen his ATP ranking plummet to as low as 34th.

The 28-year-old calling himself the ‘underdog’ against the 20-year-old is, admittedly, the truth.

America’s previous era of men’s tennis stars, which featured the likes of Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Tiafoe, is beginning to be overshadowed by an incredibly exciting prospect in Tien.

Where Learner Tien ranks among Americans on the ATP Tour

Tien’s results over the past year have seen him secure a career-high ranking of 23rd in the world, which now places him third among Americans.

Only Ben Shelton and Fritz rank higher than Tien, with the top two US stars placed 9th and 8th, respectively.

American men’s players ranked inside the top 50

Tien is the youngest American ranked inside the world’s top 50, followed by Alex Michelsen, who is 21 years old.

Shelton, still only 23, is the third-youngest and is one of the best hopes the US have of a major champion.
